I'm 13 how can I get a flat stomach and lose inches on my waist?!

Question: I'm 13 how can I get a flat stomach and lose inches on my waist?
I'm a 13 year old girl and I'm a normal BMI 19.5, but my waist measurements is pretty big... it's like 30... I'd like to lose about 7 - 10 inches off my waist and tone up my tummy... I like doing cardio but I don't want to overdo it because I haven't had my period yet so I know that I haven't grown into myself yet still how can I tone up a bit?

Answers:

jogging is an excellent exercise because it let you lose weight
evenly throughout your whole body. If you want to lose weight in
specific areas, you should target them with exercises. If they are
your problem areas, they will be very difficult to tone. You will have
to work double on them. The best approach is this:
1. Lower/control your daily calorie intake (control for normal
weight, lower for overweight).
2. Run/jog to lower your overall body fat percentage.
3. Target your problem areas with exercises.
an excellent exercise, you can do it in front of your TV: sit on a
stool, and put your toes under something (piece of heavy furniture,
for example). In your hands hold a little dumbbell. Please, make sure
that it is not very heavy, start with one kilo, for example, or you
will damage your back and spine! Slowly move the upper part of your
body back, until it's parallel with the ground. Stop for a second and
move it back to the sitting position. Repeat ten times. Every week add
to the number of repetitions. You will see the results in a week,
guaranteed! You will see or feel under the fat - if you have any - six
pack and muscles. Dumbbells do wonders. Much better than these
crunches - I came up to three hundreds and there was no results AT
ALL. With the dumbbells you will see it in a week.

I'd have to know what your other measurements are to gauge whether or not losing 7+ inches would be attainable (10" seems rather high). It's okay that you haven't had your period yet, you can still do fun cardio like Turbo Kick Boxing - that's great for toning up in general. Those exercise balls are great, too. You can get some affordable ones at Ross & use them for crunches, etc. I haven't tried the Bender Ball that's advertised on TV but have heard great things about it & intend to get one myself as I also want to tone up my waist and lose some inches. Just make sure to keep eating healthy as well as work out. Good luck & stay safe!

Personal experience

Well in my experience i joined a lot of sport groups, i know this may seem like a basic answer but you have said that don't want to over do it either.Water polo, underwater hockey and track teams make you lose a lot of weight. Rowing and roller derby give you abs and improve muscle tone. I do hot yoga (im 15) and its drastically improved the weight around my hips. Please don't do any type of diet, they don't work and they ruin your metabolism so your fat when your older. Have fun in whatever you choose and I wish you good luck!

you are so young at your age you shouldnt be dieting , but i can suggest alot of cardio , to tone up you should do bit of sit ups everyday drink plenty of water , ate salad fruit meat as for your age it is a must ,do not over do it your body will keep changing till your about 18years some even till 20 years , take good care of your health dont think about dieting but you should watch what you eat execsize as that is a good way to keep fit and we talk in 8 years time :) good luck

okay, to get into shape , rid yourself of excess fat and lose weight ,,,,,do as follows:

Stop drinking & smoking (if you do this regularly)
eat fruits & vegetables all you can (buy a food/rice steamer to make it easy on you)...(vegetables are not tasty, like junk foods,, but can be as you aquire your taste to them..and are loaded with energy and nutrients)...avoid all junk food, cokes, sweets, etc...and drink water . If you eat meat ,,eat only steamed fish or chicken.

also, do an hour of walking each day at least. or some type of excercise.

YOU SHOULDNT BE WORRIED ABOUT BEING TOO SKINNY AT 13. hope i helped :) x

the bible

Well, that might be baby fat on you, so perhaps you shouldn't worry about your figure just yet. Also, it might be your natural size for the time being. It'll change a lot over the coming few years.

Not to mention that while you are young, it is a lot easier to lose fat. (Not necessarily weight, as muscle weighs more than fat.) Make sure you exercise regularly and your body will find its equilibrium. That state should be the best for you physiologically speaking, not more, not less.

If you feel like your size is not within the natural boundaries of your age of growth, check your diet and exercise! (Although it doesn't sound to be the case, but have a few general tips:)

Do you eat junk food? Eat fresh, well cooked, nutritious food you like. I personally like a well-done slab of steak and steamed veggies.
Do you drink many soft drinks? Try carbonated water. It helped me get off of sugary beverages.
Do you like sweets? Try some of the season's juicy fruits as substitutes. I cut up a whole pineapple the other night and it's more satisfying than any candy I've ever had.

Ask yourself what sports attract you! Don't go for weight loss, go for fun and some activity that actually means something significant to you.
And certainly, don't overdo it. The change you seek will happen over time; that's why I say you should find something that you can do "hobbying out" rather "working out."

I can't advise you on the female parts of this, however...

You're freaking 13. You shouldn't be worrying about this. If anything guys should- I'm teaching my younger brother how to bodybuild so he can compete with older guys for girls, muscle is extremely hard to attain and takes a long time. Girls just need to be lean and soft-looking.

BMI is almost useless- my BMI is 21.5, yet I can get a six pack within a month if I want to. Your body fat percentage is more accurate (link for an advanced, yet simple, one is in Source).

Yet you shouldn't be doing it. Women will be fully matured by about the age 18-19. Physically (height and such) by 16. Guys are significantly later. You don't need to worry about having a flat stomach at 13. It's because you aren't fully developed that you have that bit of fat (how many children do you honestly see that skinny..? Same reasoning, more or less).

Basically, you can do light workouts. Do something that makes you active enough to sweat for an hour a day (sports in particular- or just anything that makes you breathe heavily, like swimming or fast walking) and you'll be fine. If you eat utterly cleanly (very lean meats, fruits and vegetables, nothing too tasty) and do this, you might lose a bit of fat. If you exercise a lot and eat like that, you'll lose more. Work with light weights to improve muscle definition (do a weight that you can do more than 20 reps of- you won't gain as much as define the muscles) too- that can count as part of your exercise. Basics (curls, push ups, side raises, french press, light dips, crunches [no situps], chin/pull ups [not overly important]) are key to the weight lifting part. A lot of reps, not too difficult. Don't use a lot of weight at all- injuring yourself so young could be disasterous. Stick with light enought that 20+ reps are difficult.

I'm no doctor, however I know there is nothing wrong with an hour of cardio a day, and a bit of weight lifting. Actually, it's very healthy for you. Just don't under eat in a foolish attempt to lose weight- if you eat cleanly, then the amount of weight you gain or lose is dependant on how much you exercise per day. Also, don't obsess over your image- your body is different, you may just have a naturally wider waist than you'd like. Genetics rule. When you are 16 or so (trust me will come a LOT faster than you'd think) then you can get serious about exercising and the whole "flat stomach" thing- but if you try now, you will very likely to injure yourself/make yourself unhealthy in the attempt.

Good luck
