In order to lose weight you need to use up more than you consume. So essentially yes, you'd need to burn more than the 1200. 1200 is a fairly low caloric intake, so you body should go through most of that with very little exercise. It's a bit more complex than that, as the kinds of food you eat and when you eat them can have a pretty big impact on how many of those calories you actually retain. Although calorie counting provides a decent idea of how much you're eating, I wouldn't advise it as a weight lose strategy.

As you're planning to go through with with for 2 and a half months, just cutting calories might not prove to be the best long term option, on a 1200 calorie diet you'll run out of energy pretty fast. I'd advise eating at least 1500 and exercising to get in shape. With even light jogging every morning you should be able to burn 2 pounds a week easy, and after 2 months you'll be in pretty nice shape.

No, your body burns calories natually everyday, its called your BMR Basal Metabolic Rate. depending on your age, weight and gender it differs person to person. Lets say you do eat 1200 calories per day, and burn the 1200 off in excercise and what you do normally everyday. you would burn your entire BMR for that day. Go to caloriesperhour.com there are calculators on there that will tell you how many calories you burn daily and activity calculators to tell you how many calories you burn working out. You should also eat more than 1200 calories if you're only trying to lose a pound a week and working off 1200.

First off, find a site to calculate your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) - in other words, the amount of calories you'd burn if you just lay in bed all day. Then do the exercise you think you'd need to burn the amount of food you've eaten all day.
