Why is my weight coming up as obese?!


Question: Why is my weight coming up as obese?
I am a young teen, am 5'2, and weigh 147 lbs. My BMI comes up as 26.9. It says I am very overweight and am almost obese. But I have NO (I mean NO) body fat. You can see my ribs. I've checked several different calculators and they all say the same thing. Why is my weight coming up as obese?

BMI is based on weight and height, it doesn’t distinguish fat from muscle. An athlete may have a relatively high BMI simply because muscle is heavier than fat. A better measure of body fat is the waist to hip ratio. Abdominal fat, or visceral fat, is considered to be the most dangerous type of fat since it lies deeper in the body than subcutaneous fat. An ideal hip to waist ratio is less than 0.8.

Technology is not perfect. I used a Tanita scale (scale that relies on bioelectrical impedance to determine % body fat) and it told me that I was overfat and 0.4% away from being obese. I'm not either of those (I'm 5'3 and 122 lbs).

Age is also a major factor- most technology and formulas are developed for the average white male. Yes, modifications have been made for different populations, but the degree of error is still greater.

More important than how much fat you have is where you store the fat. Those who store it around the abdominal region are at a far greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease. If you carry it primarily in the hips/buttox and chest, your risk for disease is not nearly as high.

Just eat healthily and exercise, and you will be fine. Don't let a formula tell you if you're obese or not.

i think obese is considered 20 percent over your normal weight. and, if you look fine and are healthy do not worry about bmi. before you know it you will be obsessing as everyone else about their weight.



LOL those are WRONG!
a BMI calculator does not measure how much muscle you have. So you prolly have a lot of muscle and don't worry your healthy hun, and you just contiue to eat healthy and exercise. Your not fat. Your storng.



Maybe you build strong with many muscles and a big chest. This is the case with me 2.

I had 20 % but im build as a bull so most of that 20% should be muscles.



Do NOT let a calculator determine who you are. A Calculator can not see or examine you.
