How much weight will I lose if I eat 900-1000 cals and burn off 200?!

Question: How much weight will I lose if I eat 900-1000 cals and burn off 200?
I looked at a few calorie calculators online and it says to maintain my weight I need 1500 calories and to lose weight I need to take away 500 which leaves 1000. I like to aim for 900 just so that I'll have some room for condiments and stuff. And I walk for an hour which burns 200 calories. (medically my doctor says its not safe for me to go for much longer or faster because of a condition I have)

How much weight could I lose per week this way?
I'm looking to shed 35 pounds within 4 months.

Answers:

Just going by the numbers -- you would be at a deficit of 800 calories per day.
You would be burning an extra 5600 calories per week , which if ALL is fat is roughly 2 lbs. So 8lbs a month at 4 months puts you at 32lbs. (Remember, a pound of fat is 3500 calories). But NOONE burns just fat all day long.. invariably some other tissues.. namely muscle etc will get eaten just a regular process of metabolism.

Given the high variability in every human being, you could easily shed your 35lb goal, or even 45lbs it isn't an exact science because without exact equipment, diet, and calculations we truly don't know our exact caloric expenditure daily.. (though we can get close and being 600 calories under is about the maximum you want to restrict your diet.) I really wouldn't recommend going any more than 500. A diet of less than 1000 calories a day is really pushing it healthwise.

You need to understand it is equally important to maintain proper nutrient intake while you are dieting to be able to stay healthy, but also maintain your weight loss.

Further, you should try to incorporate a 'diet' and exercise routine that you can do for the rest of your life.. or at least , in your mind, the next "year". Then you can reevaluate at that point.

Dieting and exercising for a month, or short periods of time or temporary and not good for the body. Your metabolism will adjust to losing such an amount of weight, to your introduced exercise and so on. Then just as it is doing so (for the positive) you will be stopping your 'month plan'.. since you got your results. Often we need to rethink our plans and think what will allow for weight loss, perhaps some muscle gain, over the long term. If it takes you 3-4 months to lose that weight but you can eat a little more, and are healthier overall wouldn't that be just as good?

Just think about it. Regardless your exercise sounds great, an hour of walking will often burn more than 200 calories.. the calculators are not really good with such estimations of such long periods of time. Nor do they incorporate the increased metabolic rate for hours after the exercise and so on.

I'm glad you chose walking,.. so many people overlook it as a form of exercise and even mental health -- if the majority of americans were to walk an hour a day, or even a half an hour our severe obesity problem would be incredibly impacted.

But this is about you, not "America" :) -- Maybe adjust your calories up 100 or so,.. and make sure your meals are of high nutrional value since you are taking in so few calories.

IE: Don't eat fast food, or incredibly high fat and high sugar content food. Aim for a balance of protein, complex carbs (non sugar), and low fat. (Some fat is ok.. we NEED fat to survive.. so it doesn't need to be eliminated). So just wise food choices.

With 1000 calories, you still want to eat 3 times a day. So likely a breakfast about 250-300 calories, lunch at 300-350ish, and a dinner at 400-500. Give or take. Remember it doesn't have to be obsessively accurate on the numbers... if one day you eat 1100 calories, and the next 1000, then next 950.. it is still reduction and is perfectly fine.

I stress the latter because alot of people will just eat one good size meal a day with such a diet and that's it. This is terrible and actually hurts your goals. Your body will burn fat at a faster rate with 3 smaller meals than one meal of equal caloric content. Further your stomach will shrink in size with consistent small portions.. and will NOT with one large meal no matter if it remains under your 1000 calories.

Lastly, keep the drinks in mind. Try to drink water, and/or zero calorie powerade (or similar). Drinks of all kinds have lots of sugar in them and can easily give you some surprise calories you are unaware of. You probably already know this, but some people don't realize this.

Good luck,
