Answers:

I did the Atkins diet.

I chose this because I've heard from family that initial weight loss in the first month comes off very fast, and no calorie-counting was required, only carbs.

The basic premise is you eat 20 carbohydrates a day for 2 weeks to get you into ketosis. You slowly add in more carbs to your meals during the next three stages of the diet to figure out how many carbs you can eat per day without gaining weight.

Some positive aspects are you can still eat things like cheese and red meat without worrying. Also it keeps your appetite very low, allowing me to go long periods of time without even thinking of food.

The downsides are that practically everything in the grocery store and restaurants contains carbohydrates. It's very isolating to not be able to eat simple things like pitas, pasta and even things with BBQ sauce on them.

I am still on the diet plan and I have lost 17 pounds since Feb. 1st. I went from being 150 pounds to 133, and I am 5'2" tall.

I have not gained any weight or plateaued while on this diet plan.

At first I felt the diet was unsafe, while my first week of eating low-carb I was going into a state of ketosis which caused me nausea, vomiting, extreme energy loss and sleeplessness. I didn't have the energy to even raise my arms above my head. After all my glycogen stores in my liver were used up, my body switched to burning stored fat for energy and I felt much better. I now feel the diet is safe if you can get past the initial stage.

I did not exercise at all while on this diet.

I would not follow this plan again because I don't believe it is sustainable to stop eating pastas and breads for the rest of your life. Also, weight loss on the Atkins diet is like a Devil's bargain, you will lose a lot of weight if you stay on it, but once you cheat you will gain everything back plus extra.
