What I did to help with my Air Force PT test was simple. I figured out how many I needed to do to max out (44 in a minute), and divided it into 2 sets of 22. Then, I added a few just to make sure I could hit my goal, so I started with 2 sets of 25.

For the first week, I did 2 sets of 25 with 90 seconds of rest between. Each week I decreased the rest period (75 seconds, 60 seconds, 45 seconds, 30 seconds, 15 seconds) so after 6 weeks I was able to do 50 pushups with no rest.

There are a couple of things you can do, but the best is by far the for you is to stop trying to simply add volume (i.e. the number of reps you do per day) and start adding intensity (how much you 'weight' the push ups).

Building strength in a movement is a FAR superior method to increasing the total number of reps one can do. If you think about the 225 rep test - who do you think will be able to do more reps, the guy who can bench 275 for 1 rep, or the guy who can bench 350 for 1 rep.

Obviously it's the latter, because the 225 weight is a much lower percentage of his maximal strength. It's the same with push ups - the stronger you get at them, the more reps you'll be able to do.

To do this you should start increasing the intensity with your push ups by either adding weight, or doing harder variations of the movement. Examples might be band-resisted push ups, chain-resisted push ups, TRX push ups, feet-elevated push ups or eccentrically-loaded push ups.

Hope that helps,
