Planks have stopped making my abs hurt, and now my legs are sore?!

Question: Planks have stopped making my abs hurt, and now my legs are sore?
I used to love planks for the burn in my abs and core, but lately I've been doing them a lot, and now my legs hurt to the point that I can't walk at first in the morning, and I'm getting no soreness in my abs. Don't get my wrong, I'm glad to have my legs worked, but I am trying to work my core... why has this started happening?

Answers:

First of all how long are you doing your planks for? If you are doing it for more then 2 mins then you are probably just putting a lot of strain on your joints. More importantly there is a high chance that you are doing it wrong. It's best to do it in front of a mirror, so that you can catch yourself if you begin to droop, or arch your back up. The important thing is to maintain the correct technique, so keeping your back straight.

There are many variations of planks. If you are finding a regular plank too easy.

You can use a exercise ball, and air cushion etc. I do exercise ball planks. Where you basically rest your feet on the ball, and keep your arms straight. Think elevated pushup starting position, only your toes should be on the ball. Trick is to maintain balance.

Hope that helps

Are you doing the planks with your stomach facing the floor? If so, this type of plank has always made my thys hurt as well as my shoulders. When I got stone hard abs, they stopped hurting and I felt the pain in my thys and shoulders instead. This could be happening to you too, the pain was always there but you were focusing on your abs.

swimmer- 4 years and some hardcore pilates
