Hi Sad Panda,
The short answer is you may see some short term loss but it will plateau very quickly. You basically need to avoid most processed foods of which a veggie burger is highly processed (the bun, the patty, etc).
If you're keen on losing weight, I recently discovered a book called The Four Hour Body (by Tim Ferriss) you can find it here: http://amzn.to/gpFwVX
I was able to lose 2kg (4.5lbs) in about 3 days without exercising and have lost 10kg (22lbs) by the end of the third week. The diet is mainly around replacing carbohydrates with protein, eating patterns, etc. For example out of the prescribed foods you are able to eat as much as you like (and it's not just something like lettuce or the infamous watermelon diet).
I have a blog post about it here which may help:

It is not hard to follow and the diet is nothing too extreme that it can't be easily managed. I'm sure if I did the weights exercises he had in the book I could also tone more.
Best of luck, I know weight is one of the most sensitive topics for a lot of people. It takes courage to ask, but even more courage to actually accomplish.

it depends how your diet was before you started. If you ate a bunch of pizza and big macs before, then yes, you will lose weight. But if you already ate really healthy, you probably would not lose weight. Veggie burgers are still processed and contain a lot of sodium as well, so thats just something to watch out for.
If your diet is bad now, yes, you might. But you'd need to cut out all alcohol and sweets for it to really work.
Exercise more eat less.
