Pros and cons of starving yourself?!

Question: Pros and cons of starving yourself?
So I want to lose weight. I do exercise and I do eat healthy but I still don't lose any weight. I know starvation is wrong and I'm not saying I will start I just want to know what are the pros and cons.

Ignore that "no snacks" crap - I have dropped a TON of weight by calorie counting. I NEVER starve myself - if I am not satisfying my hunger with what I'm eating and still staying within my calorie allowance, I find a different (tasty) food that is lower in calories for the volume.

Don't starve yourself. Your body will be convinced it needs to hold onto every little morsel you eat, so you'd really only be hurting your chances of losing weight AND you'd be depriving your body of what it needs to function. Nutrition effects EVERY part of your body, including your brain.

Portion control. Measure everything. Use a calorie tracker. I used to use the database www.caloriecount.com and keep everything logged in a little notebook. Now I use the database and calorie log on www.livestrong.com/myplate. I have lost almost 60 lbs in six months WITHOUT starving myself and without feeling like I'm depriving myself of anything.

You learn what foods are calorie dense and which ones aren't, and you go for the ones that aren't. For instance - a dill pickle (or a fresh cucumber) will only be about TEN calories. A spinach salad (4-5 cups of spinach, 1 tablespoon of grated parmesan cheese, and 1-2 servings of "salad spritzer" dressing such as Hellman's Balsamic Breeze) runs only SIXTY calories.

If you want a low calorie burger or chicken sandwich, imitation meat patties from Morningstar Farms are WAY better than Boca burgers, and they really do taste great. There are even 80 calorie buns from Sara Lee. I also found 35 calorie hot dogs from Oscar Meyer that taste totally normal.

I don't eat foods that I don't like, and I've still found plenty of healthy ways to satisfy my food cravings. If I want pizza, I get thin crust. If I want ice cream, I get frozen yogurt. There are SO many options out there. Don't quit eating. That's a recipe for disaster.

Experience & common sense

It isn't worth starving yourself for two main reasons; It obviously isn't healthy and moreover, your only going to gain weight twice as fast (not healthy, very fatty) when you suddenly eat after starvation, even if it is a light meal. The body needs it's daily meals and it definitely needs it's balancing.

In your case, you simply need to balance out your schedule according to meals and workouts. If your eating abundantly and engaging in a minimal amount of fitness (in other words, your not exercising till failure), then your obviously not going to lose weight to your target. If the opposite, then you'll experience only damaging of the system and even upon completion of your target weight, your body will most probably rapidly return it's weight if you suddenly pause or entirely halt your schedule. You most probably know most or all of this information, but I can't stress enough how important it is to balance everything out according to your body type.

Good luck.

Cons: loss of muscle mass, body retains fat (it goes into shock), lower cognitive and emotional functioning, lower metabolism, reduced thyroid hormone (regulates metabolism), etc.

Pros: save money on food?

Weight loss is achieved through eating less than your body uses. First, figure out your BMR. Then estimate how much you eat over the course of a day and how many calories you burn exercising. If BMR + Exercise > caloric intake then you will lose weight. Sometime this change can be small. For example there are about 3500 calories in a pound of body fat, so if you are only burning an extra 100 calories a day then it will take about a month to lose a pound of weight.

Pros: ------- There are no pros, unless you're looking forward to Death By Starvation.

Cons: If you starve yourself you're body goes into starvation mode, so that when you do eat food, it turns everything to FAT so you don't die.
You just get hungrier and hungrier, so when you do eat you will binge.
You lose muscle mass, not weight, so you become weak.
Your body does not get the nutrients it needs to survive so you become sick.

Talk to your doctor, maybe there's a reason why you're not losing weight. If not, try a different diet.

Hope I helped, and remember, STARVATION IS WRONG! :)

There are no Pros to starving yourself!! You will become very sick and weak and you could die. If you are eating healthy and excersing you may have some health issues that are keeping you from losing weight. I would suggest you go and see your doctor.

I personally suffered with anorexia.
