How come my neck hurts after doing crunches?!

Question: How come my neck hurts after doing crunches?
Today is my first day of trying to tone up my tummy but I feel a slight pain like burning in my stomach which is good but my neck is getting all this pain. It feels heavy when I lay my head down and when I pick my head up. Is there a different way to tone my tummy?

Answers:

you should only feel this in your stomach if your neck hurts its because you are pulling on your neck which you should not do all the work should be done by your core your hands should just rest lightly behind your head

but i don't like the crunch it only works your top abdominal muscles
a exercise that's really good for abs is the bicycle and leg lifts and probably a lot more but those are some of my favorites

my opinion

This is a common condition for people who do crunches, as they normally focus on the abs area, but are not aware of other parts of the body. Be aware of what your neck is doing next time, you don't have to tense it. In fact, you don't have to tense any part of your body including the abs area. Start gently and get the form correct at first. Then you can work on the quantity later.

It'll be helpful if you can exercise in front of a mirror. Sometimes what you feel your body is doing is not accurately represented when you look into the mirror. Notice what your head is doing when you're lifting it off the floor and when you're going down.

Your tensing too much; when you go up you're putting the strain on your neck more than your stomach - resulting in the pain you're feeling. There's no real way I can show you how not to do this without being there, but in hindsight the best way is not to go all the way up - go about 1/2 way and twist you're torso. Focus more on having your shoulders move the top half of your body rather than your neck.

There's a few machienes that can help you tone your stomach;

and excersize balls are good - but sit ups and crunches work just as well.

Assuming you're in school ask a p.e. teacher and I'm sure she'll show you how to do them properly - hope this helps :)

firstly the best way to tone up (lose fat) is cardio.

the pain in ur neck ir prob caused by ur technique. watch some vids on youtube about how to do a crunch and u can get really informative tips.

in a nutshell, when doing a crunch, focus ur energy on squeezing ur abs whilst keeping your neck as straight as u can without straining urself too much.

hope this helps, best of luck.

It's called "cramping" because you were working that muscle. Try to get more involved in "toning up" the stomach. The more you work on that certain style of action, the more the hurting will go away... did that help? :)

make sure your doing them right you have to give you neck proper support check with a trainer and ask him what are the best exercises to tone up your tummy and ask him if your doing crunches right.

Well most likely you are pulling on your neck which is straining it. But as for different stomach exercises try doing six inches (lift your feet six inches off the floor for 30 seconds).

your doing crunches wrong. your not supposed to move or lift up your neck. Only twist your body and move your arms/elbows. Do it properly before you injurt your neck.

dont crank on your neck put your hands on our shoulders or on your ears never behind your head
