Anorexia Nervosa is a mental disorder mainly caused in young girls and teenagers. It can also be caused in males as well but not so much. Many anorexics refuse to maintain a healthy body weight, have an intense fear of gaining weight and tend to have a distorted body image.
Because of your extreme fears of gaining weight and the disgust of how your body looks, eating and mealtimes tend to become very stressful and difficult. Thoughts on dieting, food and your body take up most of your time and energy- leaving very little time for friends, family and other hobbies you used to partake in and enjoy.
Your life becomes a constant pursuit of skinniness and going great lengths to lose weight.
No matter how skinny you become, its never enough for the person who is suffering with anorexia.
Many people with anorexia deny their weight loss and state that they are 'feeling fine' or 'never better' but truth is anorexia is a serious and potentially deadly eating disorder.
Not only do you drastically lose weight with anorexia but there are many other side effects to it damaging your health. These include hair loss or thinning, tiredness, lack of energy, constantly feeling cold (loss of body heat/fat), weak muscles and loss of color to the skin (pale).
To notice if one is suffering from anorexia would be a change in behavious e.g. dieting despite being thin, obsession with calories and nutrition labels, pretending to eat or lying about eating, strange or secretive food rituals (refusing to eat whilst others are around etc.).
Many anorexics suffer severe mood changes as well causing a loss of friends and sometimes family. They tend to push relationships away and replace it for calories and food.
To get help for anorexia isn't an easy matter. Its not uncommon to realise anorexia is part of your identity or even a 'friend'. To help someone with anorexia you firstly have to let them know and show them in some way that they have a problem ( of course do it gently ). Talk to someone about it , a family member or a school nurse/teacher and let them know you're worried. Avoid people, places or activities which trigger your obsession with being thing (avoid fashion magazines, and fashion television). Seek professional help, a psychiatrist and a doctor would be mainly suitable.

If your the one suffering with anorexia , please get help. Its a nasty nasty illness and can mess with your mind in so many ways. You don't want to be like it and suffer the consequences of being thin. It looks horrible after a while. If you have a friend who is suffering , tell someone you know you can trust. Their mum? Your mum? Your teacher? Just someone you know can help.
Hope this helped :)

I suffered from anorexia.

It starts off with low self esteem and poor body image.
You start eating less, hoping you'll loose weight- eventually you keep cutting more and more food out until your eating almost nothing. Most anorexics also over-excercise, hoping to burn even more fat and loose even more weight. But the truth is, when your body goes into starvation mode, it holds on to EVERY SINGLE thing you eat and turn it into FAT. Eventually, you get so obsessed with food/counting calories/excercising, you don't have time for anything else. Many anorexics sadly die if they don't get the help they need...

my crazy ******-up teen life

it starts as a innocent way of losikng weight. First, the anorexic will try to lose 10 pounds and once she/he is satisfied with his/her body and how they llook, they will try to lose 10 more. then 10 more and 10 more to the point where they are just bones and cutting food altogether (fasting). It is dangerous and can cuase loss of hair (early balding) and poor circulation and once you get to the pont where you lose too much you will feel weak and your body may shut down and you can die. you can fix it by increasing the amount you eat little by little.. then you wilgain weight healthy and be at a healthy weight.

Hi,

Anorexia Nervosa is one type of eating disorder. Eating disorders are psychological disorders that also affect a person physically and emotionally. The following are the formal criteria for a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa:

A. Refusal to maintain body weight at or above a minimally normal weight for age and height (e.g., weight loss leading to maintenance of body weight less than 85% of that expected; or failure to make expected weight gain during period of growth, leading to body weight less than 85% of that expected).

B. Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though underweight.

C. Disturbance in the way in which one's body weight or shape is experienced, undue influence of body shape on self-evaluation, or denial of the seriousness of the current low body weight.

D. In postmenarcheal females, amenorrhea, i.e., the absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles.

It is unknown exactly what causes anorexia or how it starts. It usually begins a person wanting to lose a few pounds or just eat healthier. But it soon spins out of control, and becomes a preoccupation with weight, calories and exercise, that literally takes over a person's life. But there is no one cause. Researchers believe that it is caused by a variety or combination of things, including genetics, chemical imbalances in the brain, and the pressure to be perfect or look a certain way that comes from our society. An individual with anorexia also uses the disorder as a way to seemingly remain in control when other aspects of his or her life seem out of control. This is ironic, because in the end, the eating disorder actually takes over control of a person's life.

Symptoms of anorexia include a drastic or sudden weight loss, or failure to make expected weight gains as a person grows. Preoccupation with weight, food and calories, excessive exercise, and poor self-image are also symptoms. Other signs to look for include weak, brittle nails, intolerance to cold, hair loss, dry skin, disinterest in activities or socializing, and covering up in baggy clothing. A person with anorexia can become so emaciated and thin, but they literally cannot see how sick they are. They remain in denial of their problem, which can be extremely dangerous.

There are several very serious complications that can result from anorexia. Heart failure/cardiac arrest, organ failure, osteoporosis (weak bones, usually seen in old age), loss of period/infertility, and death can also occur. Anorexia often occurs in conjuction with other psychological disorders, including depression and anxiety. It's estimated that 30% of anorexia sufferers die of complications related to their disorder, or commit suicide.

Fortunately, there is treatment. Treatment includes both weight restoration, and psychological help (therapy/counseling/etc). It is most effective for a recovering anorexic to work with a team that includes medical doctors, nutritionists, therapists/psychiatrists, as well as his or her support system (family, friends, etc). If an individual refuses treatment, and is in immediate danger, he/she may be forced against his/her will into a hospital or other treatment facility. However, treatment is most effective when the individual willingly seeks treatment, and wants/is willing to recover. It is important not only to restore the person to a healthier weight, but to also get to the root of the issues that may have caused the disorder in the first place. Even though anorexia is often seen by many as a disorder that is all about weight and food, it is SO much more than that.

Sorry that was so long, but I hope that I have answered some of your questions. If you have any more questions, or would like to know anything else, I would be happy to try to help. My email is macypup44@yahoo.com

Take care

Recovering anorexic

Anorexia is a mental disease, first and foremost. It happens when a person develops body dismorphic disorder. They believe that they are fat, even if they are very skinny. This causes them to starve themselves, basically. Some anorexics will also use laxatives. They are usually very conscious about counting calories and will records their intake and output. Some will even measure/weigh their own urine and feces to get an accurate account of what is coming out of them. Bottom line, though, is that it is a psychological issue and a mental illness.
