Questions about protein powders for workouts...?!

Question: Questions about protein powders for workouts...?
im a 20 yr old male andi just started working out routinely. Im not very big nor do i have alot of muscle. im about 5'8 and 135 lbs. Right now im just concentrating on core exercises (push ups, sit ups, etc). i went to a local GNC shop and the guy there recommended a protein powder called Pro Performance AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60. he said it was the best/healthiest one he had. also he said since i wont be doing anything extreme, that 20g should be enough for me (instead of the full 60 grams). anyway, i bought a 21 gram bag of it but i still have a few questions.
1) should i take it before or after workouts?
2) how about on non work out days?
3) is 20 grams really enough for me?
4) is there really a dfference in the quality of the brand. (this one was pretty expensive) would a lower end one still work?
5) does this really work? (im looking to increase muscle growth mainly)

thanks

Answers:

Yeah - you bought into the sales pitch.

If you are only doing core exercise, 20 grams is good to start - you should take it after your workout.

Does it work? Yes, especially if you take it after weight/strength training where your muscles will absorb it to build/repair your muscles.

The main reason the AMP is so expensive is that it is whey protein isolates rather concentrate. The difference is that isolates are more "pure" - more protein and less fat and lactose per serving than whey concentrates.

Whey protein concentrate is definitely cheaper but will do the job just as well. Unfortunately, a lot of people (myself included) cannot stomach the concentrate - literally. It gives me wicked gas and bloating. If you have a Wally World near you, you can find the Body Fortress brand of Whey Protein for about $18. Body Fortress also has a Whey Protein Isolate line but its harder to find. The Wally World here in Charlotte also sells the Six Star Pro line of Whey Protein Isolates for about $21.
