Are you meant to drink protein shakes before/during/after exercise?!

Question: Are you meant to drink protein shakes before/during/after exercise?
I do weights and just started to drink Frijj chocolate milk. If you don't know what this drink is, there is a picture below

Should I drink it before, during or after I have lifted weights?

After, because this is when your muscles are most susceptible to nutrients, they crave them. When you take whey protein after your workout, your pretty much bathing your muscles in the protein, which helps them recover/repair faster, which makes your muscles grow faster.

Most everyone has the gist here. If you're training hard, a small snack/drink that contains about 70% protein to 30% carbs will facilitate healthy muscle repair and optimize glucose utilization/glycogen stores. Chocolate milk has just about the perfect ratio - you dont have to purchase expensive specialty drinks.

As for the fellow who said there are 2 proteins (whey and casein)... well, he's clearly very confused. Whey protein is an "umbrella term" for a group of proteins isolated from cow's milk. Casein is one dairy protein (it also happens to be the protein to which most people who are sensitive to dairy react.) Casein is less concentrated in whey, so generally even casein-sensitive people can consume whey without problems. But it's not ENTIRELY excluded, so for cases of extreme sensitivity even whey protein is off the table to maintain digestive health.

There are no "classes" of proteins, unless you consider essential amino acids vs. non-essential amino acids. And whey and casein are not digested differently, nor is one more "fast acting" than the other.

While I'm on the subject... "protein isolates" are mostly a marketing invention. Provided you're digesting normally, it's simply not necessary that your proteins be broken down to essential amino acids for your body to utilize them efficiently. You pay a lot more for these sup's, but there's no particular benefit.

Protein shakes in general, along with the most carbs in your day, should be eaten both right before and right after a workout. Try within 5 minute time frame of finishing, and 30 minutes to 2 hours before starting--depending on what you eat/drink and how long it takes to digest. You need the protein to build/repair muscle and the carbs mainly to be converted into glycogen and used by your muscles for fuel. This is what I have concluded after researching tons of websites and is not professional/official/guaranteed advice.

There are two categories of protein, whey and casein. You want to take whey protein 1 hr BEFORE your workout and casein within 30 minutes of your finished workout. Whey protein is fast acting, and doesn't last in the body as long as casein. Whey is more of a energy supplier, while casein is the one which stays in the body and rebuilds/builds muscle. But usually if you dont know what kind of protein it is, then just take it AFTER your workout.

After exercising. Your body needs to rebuild muscle after exercising, protein shakes are best to use after you exercise. You want to eat carbs before you exercise to get fueled up.

After the exercise your body needs energy to refuel and repair.

After.
