I wanna do the splits !?!


Question: I wanna do the splits !?
I'm a dancer , been dancing for 8 years.
Next year I am moving up to the junior dance group.
I wanna be able to do the splits by then
I stretch everyday but Im nowhere near the splits yet
Help !

I am pretty sure I am older than you. I am not a professional dancer but I go to ballroom classes. and I do all types of dancing. So my body is very elastic and supple.
I dont have to do the splits in the dances that I practice. So I dont need it. But I have seen professional dancers doing the splits while dancing lets say a Tango. It looks good because it is a choreographic move (no lead and follow , just pure choreography)
Any way one year ago, it occured to me that I should try to learn how to do the split. For whatever reason, probalby because a girl that i know does it. and I am like a copycat.
I can tell you that at the start it was rather difficult , but little by little I am getting better and better.
So good that a couple of weeks ago, I was tempted to go all the way down, (I was almost 95%) so I tried to achieved 100%) I saw myself going down and down and down....when all of the suden I felt a little discomfort on my right leg. So I stop. Oh boy... I could not what properly.
So I said to myself what I have done?
Because I went to university, I know anatomy, physiology , histology, etc etc I began studying myself to pin point what damaged I made to my body.... When I came to the conclusion that I made have touched, pinched, or stretched the sciatic nerve I knew what to do...
So I prescribed myself the right medicine... I stopped doing any movement..... it took about 3 days for the medicine to work... but now that I am back to normal. I feel concern and for a while I shall not try to complete my split.... just for a while....
Yes . Probably you need to see and being monitored by a professional while you do the split. because if you do it wrongly it may cause damage. (like I did to myself)



if you keep doing leg+ pelvis stretches everday you should be able to do them:)
i can do the splits, but i've been doing them since i was about four, LOL.
some people are just naturally more flexible than others.
jogging can help stretch your leg muscles,
follow my advice and you'll be able to do the splits in about 3 weeks:)

I usually wouldn't recommend trying it without your Instructor nearby as it can be dangerous to attempt the splits on your own, however, there are videos on youtube that show you how they should be done. I learnt how to do the splits through my instructor.



OMG, me too, I've been stretching every morning, and am getting more flexible every day, so keep doing it and you will soon



It takes about 3 months to learn it...stretch your legs everyday for 10-15 mins or more if you like...you should get there eventually.
