Remember that your body is always burning calories, not just when exercising. Find your Base Metabolic rate, which is essentially how many calories your body would burn if you laid in bed all day.

Now add how much you exercise each day to your BMR (consistent, daily, relatively light exercise is much more effective than working out like crazy a couple times a week), then tack on another 500 for regular activity (walking, climbing stairs, or just sitting up).
Take this figure, and add the amount of calories you burn per day through exercise.
If your daily calorie intake is 1/2-2/3 of the resulting figure you're on the right track! Keep it up for a couple months and watch the pounds fall off.
