is it bad to do sit-ups and push-ups at the age of 12 (for a boy)?!

Question: Is it bad to do sit-ups and push-ups at the age of 12 (for a boy)?
I'm a 12 year old boy who's 5'5 or 5'4, i weigh 105 pounds and am not fat, actually, I'm pretty fit. I don't work out (lift weights) because i know that's bad at my age. But i wanted to know if doing sit-ups and push-ups is also bad? My doctor said it's alright, but a lot of people tell me it's bad. Also, push ups give me some pain under my shoulder near my underarms, my doctor just said, "No pain, no gain" but I think i'm doing it wrong. Help?

Answers:

it's not good for anyone any age to do sit ups, they are such a bad design, not only don't they work the muscle right, they risk back injury. On the push ups, give it a few days to rest up, then try again, make sure your form is good and your not over doing it. The No Pain No Gain applies to the muscle pain, not pain from the movement itself, Dr's are just like regular folk, they pick up stupid sayings too! Stop if it hurts, rest it again for a few more days, then try, chances are it's just a kink that needs to be worked out, so go slow, let your body break in right, and above all keep it enjoyable ( probably the biggest reason I'm so against sit-ups, the pain will equal little to no gain, which will lead to failure) You can lift weights, you just have to keep it on the light side, which works to your favor again, by keeping it enjoyable, it can become a life time habit!

Your doctor is right except for the idiotic "no pain, no gain" statement. Since the pushup is a bodyweight exercise, it is good for you. Try varying the position of your hands to eliminate the pain, you should not have any pain when exercising. Move the hands back farther, out farther, in closer, farther forward to find where it works best. Different positioning of the hands works different parts of the upper body more than others. Push ups are the best overall upper body exercise because they work almost every part, including the abs. Actually if you do pushups, they will work your abs better than situps.

No! its good, you should start young, don't go over board though, just do like 10-20 of each a day, it tones you. The only problem some people get is winged shoulder blades, which you do NOT want. It's when your shoulder blades stick out a bit (and it makes your upper back hurt like hell) because your back isn't strong enough to support your arms, so you'll be fine as long as you make sure to work your traps to stay balanced.
So overall, its good to sit-ups and push-ups at the age of 12

no it isn't bad. push-ups and sit-ups at your age will help you build or define muscle some so when you get to the age when you can lift weights you'll be strong already
