How much cardio should I be doing?!

Question: How much cardio should I be doing?
I've been dieting for a year now and have been working out since October, have dropped from 312 lbs. to 247 lbs. My goal is to get down 190-200 lbs. I lift weights 5 days a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday afternoon, Sunday afternoon) and I do cardio 4 days a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday morning, Sunday morning).

I've had a few people tell me that for what I'm trying to do (lose weight, firm up and gain definition) I should could back on the amount of cardio I do. I thought cardio was the best way to lose weight, is this not the case?

Congratulations on losing 65 pounds. That's quite an achievement.

Both aerobic exercise and weight lifting are great ways to lose body fat, and you should continue doing both. Aerobic exercise burns calories. While weight lifting doesn't burn that many calories during the actual performance of the exercises, it does build lean muscle mass. Lean muscle mass is metabolically active tissue, which means that the more lean muscle mass you have the higher your metabolism will be. The higher your metabolism, the more calories your body burns to maintain itself.

When you combine a good fat loss nutrition plan with aerobic exercise and weight lifting, each one complements and enhances the others, resulting in maximum fat loss in a healthy and safe way.

I think that you should continue doing cardio four days per week, but I'm worried that you might be doing too much weight lifting. When it comes to weight lifting, rest days are just as important as training days because muscles don't grow during training, they grow after training. Weight lifting causes microscopic tears in muscles, and rest days allow muscles to repair themselves, grow and get stronger. A muscle needs at least 48 hours of rest to recover from a weight lifting workout, so never train the same muscle group two days in a row.

You have done great so far and it appears to be working for you. I would try lifting 4 days per week and adding another day of cardio and chart your results. If it doesn't do any better, go back to what has been working for you. It is all about calories expended. Typically you burn more per hour with cardio than weights. However, you need to keep up the weight lifting so you don't lose too much muscle mass during weight loss.

Cardio is a main factor when loosing weight and especially when lifting. By doing both you will be able to tone your body as it gets smaller so you won't have flabby arms or a loose belly after you loose the weight. if you can try to, do at least 30 minutes of cardio 5 days a week and lift right after for best results.

no see, its actually the exact opposite. Lifting weights actually makes you gain weight bc muscle weights more then fat. Thats why so many people lift to change fat into muscle. But weight lifting really doesn't burn that many calories, which cardio does. You should be aiming for 3 weight lifting a week and a lot of cardio. Cardio is the best way to loose weight.

Trust me, common sense
