How do i fix this? (possible Eating Disorder)?!

Question: How do i fix this? (possible Eating Disorder)?
So for the last 4-5 years i haven't had the best diet. I restrict (400-800cal), then fall into binge purge cycle, then fast to fix it. Try to eat normal for a while then back into the cycle. Off and on for years. Started when i was 16 now im 21. I do work out and eat healthy (just not enough at times) I know it's very unhealthy it's just become second nature.

So this last week i ate between 500-800 cals a day and gained 2 pounds. Is my metabolism really that screwed? I haven't eaten anything solid in a week either, its been coffee, protein shake, water and healthy smoothies.

I still want to lose weight but how now? Is there a way to fix my metabolism? IDK if its hard work, i just want to eat normal and lose weight like a normal person.

Answers:

it's good that you've identified that what you are doing isn't necessarily doing you any favours.

However, obsession with eating or exercising may be unhealthy.

Try asking yourself some of these questions ideally with someone close to you:

What is your opinion of your body image?
How do you feel about food?
Do you have any feelings of guilt when you eat?
Do you know what your BMI is - and is this low?
Do you exercise a lot?
What is your life like in general - are you generally happy or generally feeling low?

Try discussing these questions and questions like it with someone you trust.

Remember that you have reinforced a kind of cycle of binge-purge-restrict. Recognise that this may be difficult to break and you may need someone you trust who can encourage you to overcome it. Balancing your diet can start with reinstating set meal times and judicious use of exercise. this is where someone can help you out by challenging you and keeping you on track.

Remember also that metabolism is slow to catch up with day-day variations in your eating behaviour. you may commence a healthy diet again and your metabolism will catch up - especially if you reinstate some healthy, moderated exercise. but sustainability and regularity of anything is key.

Hope this helps a little bit. just to encourage you.

Your body is used to starving and now holds on to food because it thinks it isn't going to get any more. You need to eat more so your body doesn't go into starvation mode. You do have a problem though and so you need to sort out the underlying issue otherwise you will just get into the cycle again. You obviously can't do this alone if you've been this way for 4-5 years. Go and see a doctor.

You need to talk to a counselor. Eating disorders are not about food or wanting to be skinny, but about something else. Something unresolved.
