I cannot straighten my back when doing yoga?!

Question: I cannot straighten my back when doing yoga?
I've been doing yoga on and off for three years now. I recently started doing it myself and noticed that my back was never straight. My mid-back is curved. I know it's not supposed to be but I simply don't know how to get rid of the curve.
Is this just a habit from slouching? Or beginner's issues? Or what?
And how can I make it stop?

Answers:

There are three general sections of the spine: cervical (neck), thoracic (rib cage), lumbar (below rib cage, above hip).

None of these sections should be perfectly straight (when viewed from side).
Thus the phrase, "stand up straight" is mis-leading.

There are lots of sites on correct posture.

There are many types of back curvatures. What do you mean by your 'mid back is curved'? Do you mean that you have an S curve (curves sideway, a sway back (curves in) or...?

If you are talking about an exaggerated or abnormal curve (as opposed to normal spinal curvature), I suggest that you try 'Yoga for Scoliosis' a video tape
