I had braces and would pick different colors too...to the person who said you'd look like you have a pepsi can in your mouth...oh just go away! You wont look bad...I mean you already have to have a bunch of metal in your mouth for the braces alone so spicing it up with some neat colors is fun!
You can do the traditional sort of thing and pick colors that go with the holiday season. Thus:
Valentines day - red, white, pink
St Patricks day - greens of various colors
Easter - pink, yellow, pastel colors
July 4th - red, white, and blue of course!
Halloween - orange, black
Christmas - red, green
You can also pick colors that go with the seasons:
Winter - white, blue, pine green
Spring - pastels, pink, blue, green
Summer - bright colors, blue, green, yellow
Fall - orange, red, rust color, brown
If you have a big event, keep it in mind and plan your colors accordingly. So, for example, you may have a school dance coming up so plan your outfit and get colors that match or at least dont clash with your dress/outfit/whatever.
If you have a friend who also have braces you guys could plan to get the same color.
If you're big into sports, you can do the colors of your favorite teams...like your favorite baseball team's colors in the summer, your favorite football team's colors in the fall/winter.
Finally, if you want to be more discrete about it then I'd pick a darker gray, or a metallic gray if your orthodontist has it...it should pretty much match the natural color of the wires.
