Answers:

My sister had one when we were teenagers. I know that her mouth was very sore the first few days, but it wasn't anything that some Tylenol or other pain meds wouldn't take care of (and my sister is a HUGE baby about everything to this day and she is 34!) so if she can make it through it I KNOW you will. I do remember that there was a "key" that she had to turn every so often (my parents usually did it for her) and it would slowly widen her mouth. On the days she had the "key" turned her mouth would be sore for about 2 days and then would be fine. She got used to it and planned ahead to drink milkshakes, eat yogurt, soft items, ect, and had items like that on hand in case it got sore enough that she didn't want to eat tougher foods. All I know is she has perfect teeth today and believes that the braces/expander was worth the small amount of suffering she went through. PS It didn't hurt her to actually have the expander itself put in, it's when they turn the key. It is NOT a sudden, horrible sharp pain. It will take a few hours for you to feel the effects so in the meantime you will be able to take some medication. Good luck!
