What should I do if I have braces and a cavity?!

Question:

What should I do if I have braces and a cavity?

I recently just got spacers on, but I've had them before so I wasn't too worried about it. But a few months before I had them put in my dentist said I had a cavity. (I never got it filled.) Now that they've put the spacers on I think it's right where the tooth with the cavity is at. I can tell there's a difference because spacers were put on the other side of my jaw and those teeth don't ache at all. But, my right side of my mouth is just bursting with pain. I can't take Ibuprofen since I'm allergic to it.

Any suggestions?

Answers:

Go to the orthodontist and explain your situation. Maybe he will temporarily remove or relocate the offending spacers until you get the cavity filled. Then, go to the dentist. Get this fixed as soon as possible because the metal on your teeth will be a collection site for food and plaque. You want your teeth to be in optimum condition before you put braces on. In the meantime, try taking a different pain reliever, such as Tylenol or Aleve.
