i just got my braces off yesterday and i got my retainer (its a regular one, not an invisible one) and i have a really hard time talking with it in and it sometimes makes me gag. Is this normal? I want to wear it faithfully because i love my teeth the way they are, but i feel uncomfortable talking to people with it in. Is it something i will just get used to?

i had a retainer. in the beginning, yes, it is hard to talk and it feels very uncomfortable. BUT you will get used to it and it will feel natural.
