Correct way to brush teeth?!

Question:

Correct way to brush teeth?

This question has been asked many times, and yet I am still not sure what method to use. I have heard that using circular motions from the gum line to the edge of the tooth is the proper way.

However, my new dentist told me that tilting the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle while placing the toothbrush at the gum line and gently moving back and forth in very short strokes is the correct way.

Any ideas? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Answers:

Both of those are good methods!! The 45 degree technique is a classic method called the "Bass." The circular motion method is great too. The important thing is to brush in a way that does not damage the teeth and gums over time. People tend to buy medium and hard brushes and use techniques that apply heavy forces in a single direction. This sort of behavior causes loss of tooth enamel and recession of the gums.

So, buy a soft brush and use gentle strokes in all directions. Remember to brush for at least 2 minutes. Electric brushes take the guesswork out of it all by having timers and force-limiting features.

You are on the right track! There is no one way to do it.
