Why do some people have to wear retainers longer than others?
I just got my braces off (yay!) and so I have to wear my retainer all the time for six months (it is the clear kind) then after that I have to wear it for the rest of my life while I am sleeping. On of my friends also just got her braces off and she has to wear her retainer all the time for one year, during night time for one year and them 2-3 times a week for a year she is done (she has the metal wire thingy). So why do some people have to wear them for the rest of there lives and others don't?

Some people have to have it fixed in place for life all the time. So don't feel mistreated. Your friends case is more common, however. It all depends on the forces trying to move the teeth to where they were. One has to consider both the muscles and the occlusion. I'll give you another yea for getting them off. I bet they look nice.
When you get your dental checkups, bring your retainer with you so it can be checked (keep it moist). As you get older, you might get a different evaluation.
