Question:

PLEASE PLEASE HELP! Wisdom teeth pain??

Went to the dentist today and they said I need oral surgery to remove my wisdom teeth. I wanted to know how bad is pain? How long would I have to take off from school/work? What can/can't I eat? How long does it take to recovery? Any other necessary things I need to know??

Answers:

How bad things are depend on several factors. How difficult the surgery to remove them will be depends on the state of the teeth themselves, if they are deeply impacted or infected, and how well developed the roots are. If the teeth have been in less than a couple months, then it won't be bad at all. If they are impacted and infected, then it's a little harder. It also depends on how well you tolerate the procedure itself, and how it's done. A procedure done under IV sedation usually leaves you pretty dazed the first day, and pain medications will take you out of the running for another day or so as a rule. Your face is swollen and touchy for up to 5days or a week afterwards, and you aren't in the mood to eat a lot. Prior to the procedure, lay in a supply of mild juices, like apple and white grape- no citrus, cause it burns. Also, sports drinks are good, and of course water. Get it loaded into the fridge so it's nice and cold. Fill the freezer with juice pops and other frozen treats, and get lots of soups for the pantry. You will not be wanting anything that needs chewing for a few days, and really cold/frozen stuff feels good in and on the mouth. Have a friend standby to bring you home afterwards and tuck you in bed. They will need to hang close for a few days afterwards, especially the first day afterwards, when you are the worst. You have to stay away from fizzy drinks and spicy/chewy foods for that first bit, but the food is not usually a problem. The fizzy sodas are off limits usually the first week, as are straws- since they can displace the clots in the spots where the teeth were and cause you to develop dry sockets. The dentist will give you a listing of post-op do's and don'ts, and I suggest you follow them to the letter. After a couple days you are usually ready to return to food, and then you want soft things. Custards, puddings, jello, cottage cheese, yogurt, eggs, cooked cereals, noodles, and the like are all fine. It's stuff that needs chewing that will cause the most discomfort, so obviously steak, burgers and pizza are off the menu for about a week. You will be needing to rinse the mouth out after eating, and cool water is best for that. Also consider getting a soft child size toothbrush for brushing until things get healed a bit. You will still need to brush, but take care not to hit the open spots, and that's easiest done with a smaller head brush. Since you won't want to fully open the mouth those first few days, it's easier to get the small brush in as well. For swelling, the best thing is something cold the first day, and small bags of frozen baby peas work best for that. They conform to the face better than ice packs, and can be refrozen pretty quickly. After the first day, sometimes warm liquids feel good, and tea is tasty. Go easy on the milk products that first day or two, though. Milk isn't bad for you or anything, but it can make the mucous feel thick and make you want to gag sometimes. You will just have to try a bit and see how that goes for you. I'd say a week off school would be the best plan, after that you may feel slow, but will be able to hang in class okay. You may tire a bit quicker, so going out will suffer, but after a week most people are getting back into the swing of things. Good luck, and just keep in mind, it's a one time thing. It's worst the first day or so, and improves from there. And the trouble is gone.
