How can I get over my phobia of dentists?!

Question:

How can I get over my phobia of dentists?

I have an intense phobia of dentists and because of this, my teeth are in really bad shape. After years of pain, I finally worked up the courage to make an appointment. My dentist says I need surgery, so obviously I'm going to be asleep for that, but I need other work done that requires me to be awake, and I'm absolutely terrified. Also, after the work has been done, I'd like to come for a checkup every six months so this never happens again, and they can't put me to sleep for that :)

Does anyone know of anything that will help me when I go to see the dentist (breathing excercises, meditation, pills from the doctor, etc)? I can't afford hypnotism or anything like that, so overcoming the fear by myself is my only option.

Thanks x

Answers:

I'm pretty terrified of dentists too, but just the thought of having my own teeth as long as I can without having to get dentures is pretty much what works for me, haha. Just let him or her know that being in the patient's chair isn't your favorite place on earth to be, and they will be more gentle than usual...at least mine was when I finally broke down and told him that I was terrified of the drills and the sounds and smells that came along with the use of them. As far as a quick fix for your fear, there probably isn't one...although like you said, breathing is definitely a nerve-soother. When you get into the chair, just do some deep breathing through your nose and out of your mouth (slowly) and just imagine that you're sitting in your favorite chair at home doing something you love...or that you're in some tropical paradise and that you've got the tastiest pina coloda in your hand. Also, remember that dentists are just everyday people there to HELP you and to do their job, just like you do your job. They aren't there to hurt you in any way.
