I got novacaine and now can't feel my tongue!!!!!?!

Question: Ok...actually I can still feel it, but it feels weird on the top. On Thursday I got some cavaties worked on and had to get Novacaine in the wayyyyy back part of mouth. When he was putting in the Novacaine I could feel my tongue tingeling. He said that was normal because he had to work close to those nerves. Now it is 2 days later and my tounge feels kind of numb on the very top of my tongue (kind of like how your tongue feels when you burn it slightly with a hot drink) and it also feels like an air bubble under my tongue on the side he worked on. Is this normal?

Its called parashtesia, or partially numb. Happens if there is a little extra pressure on the nerve, could have happened when the injection was given to you. All novocain or its types, local anesthsia is reversible, usually after 3-5 hours, depending on how much quantity was given, But 2 days is way out ! Recheck with your dentist, there is nothing much he can do but it should go away in time. The lingual nerve which is close to the inferior alveolar nerve is usually numbed too in these dental prcedures. The inf alvel.nerve supplies the teeth, while the lingual nerve covers the front and the side of the tongue of that side.

I'm under the impression that if a nerve is injured or severed during injection the numbness can even be permanent. Def check with you dentist tho!

the answer given by the downthe earth is quite appropriate. I just want to add that please dont panic.....these nerves have a remarkable capacity to heal themselves. Sometimes for such paraesthesia we prescribe vit B1,B6, B12 vitamins for a couple of weeks which help in getting rid of such irritating symptoms of numbness etc. The condition may last for 2-3 months even.
