Question: My husband has had a rotten tooth since he joined the army (in 2002) he went to the army dentist but they just filled it, well now its starting to get alot worse, it has rotted so much the filing has fallen out and its just to the height of his gums, well now his ear is starting to hurt, and his gum is, not the actual tooth he can tap it and everything but it doesn't hurt. But he cant sleep as soon as he lays down it hurts, the only soulition he has found is to drink cold water (it has been well over 100 glasses in the last two nights) he knows its not good to drink that much but he can't find any other soultion, we don't have the money to go to a dentist, so if we were to pull it ourselfs (the strongest pain reliver is my 500 mg vicodin) what would you say to do?? we do have alot of beer he could drink, but we dont want to do that, also what tips do you have to help it stop hurting him so bad, we cant even sleep at night, because i am too worried to sleep because he is so sore.

Ma'm, first thing is that just be relaxed and reassure your husband also to take it easy. But please never ever try to pull the offending tooth yourself- ma'm it is dangerous and please dont think in that direction. Regarding 100 glasses of water, please note that in such dental conditions sometimes cold water definitely gives some trasient relief.... for that he need not drink so much water- he can just hold the cold water in the mouth for a while and then spit out. Secondly, it is noted with great sympathy from your letter that you are unable to visit a dentist, What we generally give to our patients for such conditions- to control the acute phase- is Capsule Amoxycillin 250mg capsules every 8 hourly for 3-4 daysand also we give some pain-killer every 8 hourly for those days. Please talk to your doctor before taking any medicines.
One thing you can do is that you can take a small cotton pellet, soak it with litte oil of cloves and then dab off the excess oil on another dry cotton and then put that cotton pellet in the already mutilated tooth. I think this will give you husband a lot of relief for the time being and he will enjoy a sound sleep.
Regarding his pain getting aggravated with hot things, it happens. But after the acute phase is bit passed, then again you can try warm saline rinses which would also offer relief. Please find out the ways of getting professional advice.
Good luck, take care !!

Get an aspirin and let him bite down on it, right on the tooth that hurts. Also, the oragel that numbs gums when babies are teething is excellent for something like this. He needs to go to an ER (they are medically obligated to see you, regardless of your inability to pay) and possibly have them do something there, maybe antibiotics. He needs to find a local dentist who will just pull it, most are about $100 to pull the tooth, not including xrays.
Good luck, honey...I know how it feels to be in your situation monetarily. Merry Christmas to your family and I hope all is well with him.

Sounds like an absess. I suggest going to the ER. They would give you a prescription for a pain killer and also an antibiotic. Antibiotics are cheap to get filled generically.

Do not pull it yourself. The problem is more than just the tooth, it's the root as well. Don't do it.

Ora gel or ambasol will numb the tooth, but he is going to have to go to the dentist, even if it is for emergency removal of the tooth. you don't know how bad this can become, he can actually die from it especially if it gets infected. the poisons from the infection will have an easier time traveling down to his heart and other organs as it trickles down his throat. So Ora Gel and Ambasol will help with the pain for now, but you got to find some one who will remove the tooth and check his gums, plz check asap for any one, tell them about your situation and see if they can help you, you'll be surprised how many people out there that are willing to help other if they know the whole story.
Good luck my dear and have a very merry Christmas.
keep the faith....cya....

If your husband's ear is starting to hurt then you have a bacterial infection caused by the root of the tooth. If left untreated it can worsen and spread further. Other complications may arise. If this is the case that he has a bacterial infection, then he must go to the hospital and they must treat it with Antibiotics. I don't know where you are, but here in Canada we have drop in centres that serve the destitute and poor and offer free dentistry (usually practicing students) that will pull the tooth. My advice would be to go to the hospital first and treat the infection. The hospital has a duty to help and they may even send him to a specialist in the hospital. I would not pull out the tooth on your own as you risk severing a nerve in the wrong place which could lead to a paralysis or numbness of the face. Here is an article from the web...

"Toothache" usually refers to pain around the teeth or jaws. In most instances, toothaches are caused by tooth or jaw problems, such as a dental cavity, a cracked tooth, an exposed tooth root, gum disease, disease of the jaw joint (temporo- mandibular joint), or spasms of the muscles used for chewing. The severity of a toothache can range from chronic and mild to sharp and excruciating. The pain may be aggravated by chewing or by cold or heat. A thorough oral examination, which includes dental x-rays, can help determine the cause, whether the toothache is coming from a tooth or jaw problem.

Sometimes, a toothache may be caused by a problem not originating from a tooth or the jaw. Pain around the teeth and the jaws can be symptoms of diseases of the heart (such as angina or heart attack), ears (such as inner or external ear infections), and sinuses (air passages of the cheek bones). For example, the pain of angina (inadequate supply of oxygenated blood to the heart muscle because of narrowing of the arteries to the heart) is usually located in the chest or the arm. However, in some patients with angina, a toothache or jaw pain are the only symptoms of their heart problem. Infections and diseases of the ears and sinuses can also cause pain around the teeth and jaws. Therefore, evaluations by both dentists and doctors are sometimes necessary to diagnose medical illnesses causing "toothache."
