About tooth abscess ...?!

Question:

About tooth abscess ...?

I have an abscess on my gums from my tooth , I can feel the pain in my cheek too. I couldn't get a dentist appointment untill July 24th so is it safe to pop it to relieve the pain and should I find another dentist that will take me sooner? I am a little worried about waiting that long.

Answers:

For infections sake-NO!!!! If you attempt to pop it like you would a zit 1) you'll have yucky goo or abscess liquid come out and 2) you'll expose the area and open yourself up to making it more infected than it already is, plus doing so would make you more vulnerable to "catch" another infection of some sort be it from someone else (kissing, sharing drinks, cups).

The mouth is a extra sensitive place, which is why tooth pain or other oral problems can feel much worse than being sick or even a headache.

The best thing to do is, go out and buy some of that orajel, or a numbing tooth product at your local pharmacy, and if your not sure how to find it you can ask your pharmacist. Pain killers like Tylenol or Ibuprofen is good, I've also found that using ice cubes or sucking on Popsicles also helps because the coldness literally takes away the pain for a good several seconds. I know it doesn't sound worth it but trust me, if you've been dealing with tooth pain for long periods of time, a tiny relief makes a big difference. If you notice a change in the amount of pain you feel or if you notice your gums starting to change color, it could possibly be anywhere from bright red to white to blue (yes blue, depending on how severe your condition is), or if the pain moves to other areas such as your ears you should seek professional help or go to the ER asap to get it checked out. The ER Dr. will and has to check it out, and my friend with a similar problem has acquired good pain meds that way. I hope this has helped you, good luck and take care!
