I have an infection in my wisdom tooth socket. What will my dentist do?!

Question:

I have an infection in my wisdom tooth socket. What will my dentist do?

I had my wisdom teeth out six days ago. My right lower site has been the most painful and swollen all along, but yesterday I noticed a kind of unpleasant taste following my saltwater rinses. The unpleasant taste intensified today, and since the swelling has subsided enough, I was able to see down into the socket hole. It is white inside and red near the opening. It sure looks like an infection to me. I am going back to the dentist ASAP. What is he likely to do about it?

Answers:

Yeah, it is called a dry socket, what they did for me (I was in excruciating pain over it) was the reopened the site with a scalpel and then packed in a bunch of little tiny gauze packets soaked in this foul tasting/smelling medicine.
