Question:

Wife wants to becoming a dentist ??

My wife is 32 and wants to become a dentists. She is now a dental hygenist. With factoring in about 200k to go to school and lost wages for what she would loose for the 4 years of school. What is the best way to figure if it is finacialy worth pursuing ?? and what is the potential income possibilities as a dentist along with work load and time away from home. We are trying to make an edjucated decision on weather this is somthing worth going after at the age of 32 and after graduation 36 or 37 any help from an actual dentist would be helpfull.

Answers:

If your wife is already a dental hygienist, then she is already very well versed in many of the dental areas. Besides the financial aspects, once she is a dentist, she can pretty much direct her own future by setting up an office (or associating with another dentist) and doing her own work.
But, the question about finances. In most cases, the federal government will greatly assist with educational loans. In fact, most dentists come out of dental school now with about $150,000 in debt. The other side is, the earning potential in dentistry is great. The average general dentist brings in about $158,000 per year. If you are able to support the family for the first few years after dental school, most of her student debt can be paid off early. If she became a dentist by age 37, she can still have about 30 years of worthwhile production and, in the long term, this can result in very substantial income. By the way, state supported dental schools are much less costly than private university dental schools.
