I just started a root canal procedure. Do I truly require a post/crown?!

Question:

I just started a root canal procedure. Do I truly require a post/crown?

The specialist preformed the root canal procedure. He put in a temporary filling. The next step is to go back to my dentist and get a post and then a crown. Can I get a permanent filling? I think the tooth number is 14 (3rd or 4th tooth from the upper right - back).

Answers:

After root canal therapy, the tooth no longer has a living nerve inside it with a blood supply to keep the tooth moist on the inside. The tooth dries out, which weakens the collagen fibers holding the dentin and enamel together, consequently over time the tooth becomes crumbly.

So yes, you want to put a post / core and crown on the tooth to hold it together.

Otherwise, in a year or two you might find the tooth cracking apart, and all the money you invested in the root canal procedure just went down the drain.
