Im really nervous. Dentist help?!

Question: On my top row of teeth, the last tooth on my right side has a hole on the side of it. When I brush it, it really hurts. Tomorrow I am going to the dentist to get a few cavities filled and to get this tooth checked out.

Im a baby when it comes to pain... I tear up when I get novacaine shots... so will laughing gas help me get through this better??

I think laughing gas would help you a lot. It really helps people relax and it is also a mild analgesic (stops pain). You might want to tell the dentist that shots have really hurt in the past, and you were wondering if they could go slow so that the shots don't hurt as much (the part about shots that hurts the most is the anesthetic, which is acidic, going into the tissue. If the anesthetic is delivered slowly, there usually is little discomfort.). Also, if it is any comfort to you, the upper, back, top tooth is one of the easiest teeth to numb in the mouth. Best wishes.

Modern dentistry is painless. But that doesn't help me about being a basket case when in the chair. I need the gas just to get the novacane shot. I'm also getting to need it for a cleaning. It's not a pain issue, I can handle pain elsewhere. In my case as a kid (early 60's) I got freaked out by my dentist, no novacane and belt driven slow speed drills. He was an older man, so it probably was not even state of the art for that era. Get the gas. Also, it's a good high. The only one I get since I quit drugs over 25 years ago.

SAME HERE! THATS WEIRD. just dont think about it. think about what it will belike afterwards saying "it wasnt so hard!"

Nitrous Oxide is a great way to relax in the dental chair. Tell the DDS assistant that you are having some fears about the injection. Ask her if she can sit you in the chair for a few minutes with the nitrous oxide running before the DDS comes in. Also, bring a CD walkman or Ipod with you to your appointment to help distract you from the procedure. You even might want to consider in the future when you get longer procedures getting the DDS to prescribe a drug called Halcion which is an oral sedative you take 1 hr before your appointment :-)
