It depends on how long you have been out of braces. When you first get them removed, and for about a year, the gums are too flimsy and weak (from the pushing and pulling of the braces and tightenings) to remain in the shape they were forced to be by the braces. So, they will gradually go back to their natural pattern if you do not wear the retainer. But if you do, the gums will harden and set in the place where the braces put them and you will not have to wear the retainers anymore. Me and my brother are perfect examples...he did not wear his retainers and his teeth have moved significantly...I did and mine are still rather pretty and straight. It is worth it!

Yes obviously.

If you wanna "experiment" then leave it out for one week and you'll need braces again.

That'll be a lesson learned.

But I don't recommend it.

Either find you're retainer or get a new one as soon as you possibly can.

Goodness, how do you people lose your retainers anyway?

Yes! Your cartilage is still soft from giving under the pressure of moving those teeth! It can take a year or two to totally solidify so that those teeth don't move anymore! Get a new retainer made to retain that beautiful smile! ;-)=

you only need a retainer if you want to protect the investment that is your teeth, smile and bite. your teeth will tend to wander over time, due to natural forces, probably the same ones that created the misalignment in the first place.

get another one and use it, if only at night. you can't wear it for too long, really, and it makes a nice safety blanket (if you will)
