Why is it bad to chew ice ?!

Question: Just curious... haha

Answers: Just curious... haha

Chewing ice is not necessarily so bad, it's what happens when the ice breaks that is bad. The teeth bang together and teeth against teeth is bad. Your teeth have the ability to know where their opposing mate is as you chew, this is called proprioception. When you chew something like ice you override the protective mechanism of proprioception and therefore they hit each other with too much force. If this is done over a period of time, you increase your chances of fracturing your teeth. That' s why you shouldn't chew ice.

It can cause small cracks in your teeth. Bacteria can then get in these cracks and cause an infection, forcing you to get an extremely painful, extremely expensive root canal.

My dentist told me to stop chewing ice! It can crack your teeth. The teeth can become damaged and fall apart years after you chew the ice.

i didn't know it was that bad. been doin it for years, my favorite snack used to be ice with lucas limon powder on it when i was a kid. kinda weird. my molars are sorta small and flat as it is. hmm.

Well I know it is really bad to chew ice with braces cause you can bend the wire. I sort of have a habit though, but I also use crushed ice so its a little better. :)
