I had root canal treatment yesterday and have been left with terrible toothache !
Question:
I had root canal treatment yesterday and have been left with terrible toothache which is not subsiding.?
I phoned the dentist and was told it was normal and to contact him tomorrow if it has not abated. It has not. Why is this and what can the dentist do about it? The pain is nearly as bad as the abcess that brought about this treatment in the first place.

Still here and the pain is worse than ever
Answers:
I really would not say this is normal. To me what is normal is either no pain or a mild discomfort if pressure is put on the tooth.
If there is considerable pain then I would say these are your most likely possibilities;
1)filling is high
2)infection under tooth, so should consider taking an antibiotic. Were painkillers prescribed for you?
3)if the root canal was simply started and not finished, perhaps not all the nerve was taken out of the tooth
4)the dentist had the endodontic files out the tip of the tooth into the surrounding tissue and chewed them up a bit
5)if the endodontic filling was short or long in the canal, or if the tooth was perforated or if an instrument broke in the canal (the dentist would likely have informed you if any of these had occurred, but can not assume that for certain....ask the dentist).
