What the hell can this be from?

The name for what you are describing is Crepitus. You likely have something going on in your left Temperomandibular Joint (TMJ). If you don't have any pain associated with it, and if you can open as widely as the next person, if your jaw will move to the right and to the left as far as the next person, then it may not be a problem. But you need to think about if this degenerates and worsens and one day you do have pain or limited ability to open or move your jaw. Talk to your dentist about it.
