No they don't. I had tops on for about 2 years before the bottoms came on and I never had spacers for the top, only the bottom.

The first time I had tops on I never had any anchors, only on the bottom. I can feel right now with both top and bottom how the bottom has the anchors and the top just has bracket

What did your ortho say?

Spacers allow a space to form in between your teeth. Allowing a space possibly for the wire.

They need to put the spacers in between your teeth to make room for the metal bands that go around your back teeth to hold the wire and brackets for the braces.

spacers are to space out your teeth, giving a space between your teeth where one of the metal things hug your molar or wisdom teeth

the spacers make room so that the orthodontist can put the anchors around your teeth to hold the braces on.

The spacers move the teeth apart to make room for the brackets that go around your teeth

everyone I know including myself had to have spacers before getting braces. I think they are so they can space your teeth out a bit so when they put the braces on they have room to move to be able to straighten them

You need spacers to give rooms for the anchor brackets on your molars.

Edit: Answering your edit question...Whether you get braces on the top or bottom, you will need spacers there. You said you will get braces on the top, so your ortho will put the spacers in back set of your teeth (molars).
