What causes cavities?!

Question: Acid is produced as a byproduct of bacteria metabolizing sugars. As I tell patients, you eat the sugar, the bacteria in your mouth eat the sugar and produce a waste product which is acidic. Acid weakens the enamel. Bacteria can not metabolize fats, proteins, complex carbohydrates, or artificial sweeteners, only simple sugars.
Good oral hygiene is important to gum health, but what you eat has the biggest impact on caries (cavity) formation.

Tooth decay caused by acids.

i work for an ortho.. most of it has to do with the plaque left on teeth. like if you brush and floss them really good, you wont have a problem. but if there is any plaque at all left anywhere, the sugars from foods will bond with the plaque and instantly start decay. thats why its so important to brush at least twice a day. and its also why soda is SO bad for teeth. it has SO much sugar.
