What does a periodontists do and how are they diff.from dentists?!

Question:

What does a periodontists do and how are they diff.from dentists?

Answers:

A periodontist deals exclusively with the gums and the bone regions holding the teeth roots (the alveolus). They do not drill on teeth or do fillings or any restorative work.

I think thedrsson above is a bit confused. Periodontists do have a bit of overlap with oral surgeons (in the area of placing implants), but nothing beyond that. They are NOT specialists in oral surgery.

Oromaxillofacial surgery is a whole other specialty branch in dentistry that goes way beyond the gums and alveolus-- Oral surgeons do extractions, orthognathic surgery, facial reconstruction, etc. (which perios aren't supposed to do).
