1) You will be in absolute pain for at least 4-5 weeks. Honestly, it's unbearable pain. It will hurt immensely because your teeth will actually be moving and the braces are really tight the first couple months.

2) I could only eat like....soup or LIFE cereal for the first few weeks.

3)The wax is to put on the braces so they don't rub against the inside of your mouth causing huge sores/ebrasions.

4) Brush them after every meal. (not always an option, but try) And they will give you a thread like floss, you MUST use this. It's going to be awkward because your going to have to put the thread through your braces and it won't feel normal.

5) DO NOT CHEW GUM! Do not chew gummy substances like gummy worms, etc.

** Having braces is incredibly painful. You have to stay rigid with your schedule and be consistent with cleaning them and flossing. Don't give up. There will be days when you just want to take them off. And, your going to get HUGE Kanker sores in your mouth....BUT believe me, it's worth it. It really is.

They can hurt..... You shouldn't eat anything sticky or really chewy....or really hard....cut up your apples and stay away from taffy!! The wax is for when the brackets dig into your cheek... There are special brushes and flossing aids to help you clean them.

1. They hurt when they get tightened and when you first get them on, but not when these aren't happening, unless they break.
2. Your orthodontist will probably tell you, but sticky foods, popcorn, pizza crusts, and chicken/turkey drumsticks are a few. I've eaten them all while I had braces, so it's not like anything drastic will happen.
3. The wax is to keep the wires from hurting you if a wire pops out. I'v never had to use them in three years of braces.
4. Nothing.
5. Brush your teeth a lot and don't eat the foods they tell you not to? Oh, and don't get hit in the mouth, because it really hurts with braces.

1> Uncomfortable @ first, like a tight grip on your jaws, but it's not unbearable. Eating IS a bit tricky @ first because of discomfort but should ease up in a week
2> At first I was told by my Orthodontist: "NO GUM!" but i after getting used to the braces I was able to eat gum
3> The wax is to prevent the edges and corners of the braces from cutting the insides of your upper & lower lips. The wax coats the metal
4> Use mouthwash. Carry toothpicks
5> Cant think of anything, jus brush your teeth more often than you usually would

1. they only hurt the first couple weeks. if u have bad teeth, then it will take more weeks.
2. u can eat actually anything as long as u know how to chew without breaking it. dont try to eat super hard stuff its bad. i broke my brackets so much. i had braces for two years becuz of that. my brother also got kicked out haha.
3. wax is for when the wire pokes u in the back. u put the wax there so it dont hurt u too much. u can also put it at where ur brackets poke u when u get punched by someone. it hurts a lot.
4. u have to floss every night. i dont do that every night or a lot so i get brown stuff at the edges of my teeth. u should alos brush after every meal if u want.
5. u should use ur teeth to open anything. ur brackets can break.

if ur teeth is really bad it will take a long time for u to take off your braces. hope this helps u a lot. and hope u r successful with braces.

It will be hard to eat at first. Your teeth will be sore. Your lips may become irritated after the first couple of days, but they will get better.
Try eating soft things the first few days. Don't ever eat popcorn, peanuts, hard candy, or chew any gum w/sugar in it.
The wax is to comfort the inside of your mouth from ulcers. If you can go w/out the wax, that would be best. This way your mouth will become used to your braces. I would recommend using the wax when your wire begins to poke you. It will begin to do this as your teeth straighten up. Just make an appt. to get the wire clipped. No big deal.
Always always always floss. You should also receive a little Christmas tree looking brush to use. Ask the assistant to explain how to use it.
Just be sure never to eat hard things. Never bite directly on to an apple or anything hard like that. Always cut it up and then eat it with your back teeth.

Sorry I haven't had them but I know A LOT about them because I get them in 6 days! I have pacers now! Ouchies!!!!

1.Yes from what I here they are sore for about a week

2.You can't eat hard, sticky, chewy, stuff and more:http://www.greatsmiles.net/foods/foods.h...

3.The wax is for when the braces cut your lips and cheeks and it's sore and stuff here is a video on how to apply it: http://youtube.com/watch?v=SymFx0mU9L0&f... I suggest to continue watching her videos, they are really good

4. Water pik, flossing, electric toothbrush (ask orthodontist) mouthwash, toothpaste etc...

5. You shouldn't get a bad color! lol But you shouldn't play hardcore sports w/o a mouthguard! You should keep your teeth clean now and when you will get them on cause you can get cavities and decalcification (stains on your teeth that does not go away!!!) Brush well and have goood hygiene even when they hurt! If you need help with spacers post another question!!

God Bless you!!

Ok I've been through most of it, just got my brace off and my retainers on.

1. They hurt mostly in the beginning and somewhere in the middle too. Firstly I think they MIGHT have to remove some of your teeth if your jaw is too small to hold that many teeth. This is one of the most painful parts. They also put a small piece, called a spacer, between your back teeth and the teeth right next to them. This is to allow for space for a metal piece to hug the back tooth and hold down your entire brace. This can be painful too. Also, in the 3/4 stage you might have to wear rubber bands that go from the back of your lower teeth to the front of your upper teeth. And if you hear something about powerchains, if you get them at the same time as your rubber bands... It's time to bribe the hospital for morphine haha. The rubber bands make your gums sore if you talk too much like me, because as you talk you're pulling your teeth out, sort of. O.O

2. They recommend not eating stuff that will get stuck (like chewing gum), and nothing too hard like apples that might dislodge the wires or something. Me, after a while I did away with it and ate whatever I wanted to. Your orthodontist can tell you more about this.

3. The wax is used to cover up any pointy bits that are poking you. This WILL get troublesome because the wax often slips off. Also, when the wires begin to stick out at the back (because your teeth are moving) it will be almost impossible to put a ball of wax on it. Only way is either to bear with it until ur next visit, or make an appointment so your orthodontist can cut away the extra wire. However, if your molars have not grown out yet, when they do grow out the wires will mostly only poke into them, thus you should experience little to no pain after that.

4. You can use mouthwash, or if you can afford one, an electric toothbrush. Try to brush three times a day instead of two IF YOU CAN. I was always very bad at this. =(
FYI I didn't get the electric toothbrush, I used the regular one.

5. You should not try to pull at the wires just because they are hurting at the back, because this will make it slip even further back. There was once I managed to get so much of my wire out the back I had to dislodge it from the brackets on my teeth and let it poke the outside of my cheek because the inside was already so sore. Had to go back to get the wires fixed. Also, if you notice your brackets on the teeth breaking, you need to make an appointment as soon as you can so it can be fixed. I never really noticed.

1. Yes, they hurt. Not bad and you will get used to it.
2. Stay away from sticky stuff, candy, sugared pop. After you get used to them, you can eat most things.
3. The wax is to protect your lips and cheeks.
4. Cleaning your braces is vital. There are several brushing systems for cleaning braces. Ask your orthodontist.
5. Don't play with them. Don't play brass instruments. In sports ,ask for a mouth guard that will fit braces. Don't kiss anyone that is wearing braces.

Remember, you are doing this for pretty ,well aligned teeth that will stay healthy. Don't get discouraged
DDS 33years

i have braces..they're not as bad as you think!
#1-they hurt the morning after you get them on but i though it was worth it because if for dinner we had something i didn't like i could say i couldnt chew it and got soup and pudding :-]. by a week after they wont hurt at all
#2-i really didnt have much eating issues after that first week, although it is hard to bite really hard stuff like candy but ive had mine for 6 mo. and i can eat anything (although sticky stuff gets stick in them easily )
#3-the wax can be pretty helpful. sometimes (almost all the time for me) the wont cut the wire in the very back short enough so it woulld pokethe very back of my gum and i would put wax on it. but dont put it on the first few weeks because although it will feel pokey (unless something broke) you have to give ur teeth and mouth time to get used to them. if something breaks wax can be a barrier till u get to the ortho
#4-other than brushing alot get one if those skinny little itty bitty pick brushes to get stuff out that is stuck (stuck food can be very obnoxious :-]) thats really it...brush very well (i am a swimmer and chlorine stains ur teeth so i got special fluoride toothpaste and it keeps my teeth very white :) )
#5- i pretty much did everything although if you do a sport when people could hit ur mouth i'd be very careful it hurts when people hit your mouth!!! dont pick at your wire...ive heard it can screw things up...
mostly, give yourslef time to get used to them and after a while it seems like they're not even there anymore!!!

Hope i helped you!

You'll have a beautiful smile afterwards!

1. Quiet honestly...Yes. Like everyone in here mentioned, it hurts for the first couple of weeks, but most of that pain will be in the first week. It took me about a month before I could bite into a solid food without my teeth hurting. For the first of couple of weeks, you're going to have to have a soft food diet, like Campbell's soup, mash potatoes, rice, and any other soft food.

2. Whether if you're get clear braces or metal braces, you eat, drink, or chew sugar gum, coke, anything sticky, or anything to hard (because it might break the brackets). If you're getting clear braces, you can't anything that will stain the brackets like curry and coke. Other than that, you can pretty much eat anything.

3. The wax is used for dental wire sticking out. You just take a little piece of that wax, roll it up into a ball and stick it in the protruding wire.I haven't had that problem yet, however...If the wire is really bothering you...Just ask your orthodontist to cut it off.

4. Brush daily, twice a day! Your ortho might tell you to brush after every meal but that's unnecessary, especially if you're in school. You should brush with the special toothbrush your ortho gives you, floss your teeth, and use mouth wash. They'll also give this tiny brush which you can use to remove food stuck in your teeth while you're out and about and away from your bathroom.

5. You shouldn't do anything too physically extreme. It's a pain in the butt when you have to go to the ortho to replace a missing or broken bracket.

Hopes this helps and good luck!

1. Not gonna lie, yes only for the first week and a couple of days after they tighten them every month. I would suggest pasta and liquid meals.

2. I ate everything they said not to. I ate taffy once, but it got soooo stuck, I decided not to eat it. It was hard for me to eat a whole apple so I cut mine up. I chew gum every day and am careful when I do so it doesn't get stuck. I chew on crushed ice, eat popcorn... You can eat whatever you want as long as you are comfortable with it and you clean your teeth afterward.

3. The wax it USELESS. It is there for you to use on spots that are poky or that cut your cheeks. It never stays on longer than 5 minutes and you end up spitting it out. If you have sore cheeks, the wax might help for a little bit, but I would just go with it because your cheeks will get used to the braces in time. My opinion, the wax is not worth the hassle.

4. Try to floss them at least. Use the tools they give you, like a pick that goes in between the brackets to get the places that the toothbrush missed. Also, I would ask your orthodontist or dentist for a perscription mouth wash. Its about $10 a bottle and is 5 times stronger than what you can get at the store. It is really good for people with braces because it is hard to get all of the spots when flossing.

5. Don't do anything that makes you uncomfortable. If you play sports, buy a cheap mouth guard at the store. Basically, try and forget they are there!!! And think about the outcome of it all when you have those painful moments! :)

They dont hurt when you first get them on, but after a few hours they do start hurting. You shouldn't eat hard foods such as pizza crust, hard candy, taffy, or jaw breakers. You should stick to foods such as yogurt, pasta, cereal. Dont eat solid foods for the first couple of days, you will be in pain if you eat them. Just try to stick with really soft foods. Hope this advice helps, Merry Christmas! :)
