Dental Pain. Please help?!

Question: About 6 months ago I had a couple of deep cavities filled. After that, the teeth felt fine other than being slightly sensitive to cold water, but that was it. Anyways, about 1 week ago out of the blue I started having severe pain in my mouth and head/ear aching. I went to the dentist the next day and he said that I needed a wisdom tooth removed, so he took it out. It has been 3 days since my wisdom tooth was pulled. The area that the tooth was pulled feels fine, there is NO pain coming from that area. I have one tooth that hurts whenever I put pressure on it and the temple area of my head is throbbing with head aches (ear area as well). The absolute worst part however is that all inside my mouth and my tongue feels like there are tons of blisters or ulcers, but there are no signs of anything there when I look inside my mouth. Obviously I think I may need a root canal, but is there anything I can do to help the pain inside of my mouth? Medication works, only for a very short time.

These teeth pain issues can be tricky. It's very possible that you need a root canal on that tooth you push on that hurts, though that is not the only possibility. Other things which could cause the tooth to hurt include a change in the bite or a sinus infection. If your medical history allows it, I would take some ibuprofen for the discomfort. One possibility for the discomfort you are feeling on your tongue is that your lingual nerve was injured during the extraction. This is a relatively common occurrence from wisdom tooth extractions. Sometimes even injections can cause this. Usually it will resolve within several months. You should ask the dentist about it as well. I would go back to your dentist and have them try to locate the tooth that's hurting (tell them which tooth you think it is) as well as ask them about the sensation you are having on the inside of your mouth.

I'm sorry that you're having complications during the Christmas season. I hope things get better for you soon.
