Really gross question about post-wisdom teeth removal! Is this normal?!

Question: I had my wisdom teeth out last Tuesday and over the next few days after I found there to be a gross taste/smell coming from the surgery site. I thought it was just normal and whatever until today when I finally was in little enough pain and had enough balls to just look back there and it was that the holes in my gums/cheeks where the teeth used to be were wide open and STUFFED, like, grossly packed with old food & plaque-y stuff. I dug it all out with a toothpick and there was a lot. Now I find it disgusting & hard to eat and I'm wondering if this is normal and if it is how do I make sure to keep it all clean back there?

Thanks.

You need to call your dentist. It sounds like dry sockets. It's where the blood clot that was supposed to have formed in the socket to start the healing process has been lost - perhaps due to swishing mouthwashes too hard and spitting soon after extraction, or sucking through a straw, or smoking -- but it's usually quite painful because it's actual bone that is exposed to air and food. It will normally heal on it's own - it just takes a bit longer and will be painful. But your dentist can pack it with some medicinal anesthetic packing that will make it feel so much better until it heals. It's pretty common.

Just ignore it until the end of the day. Then, clean it out and brush your teeth.

YUCK!!!!!!! visit the dentist. YIKES!!!!!!! *its ok i hope good luck. <3*

Your dentist should have sutured those holes shut. Try using a water pick to clean them out and definitely call your dentist and tell him/her.

You should not be using a toothpick to clean the area. Did they not give you a syringe you could fill with water to flush the area out???

That stuff you dug out might have been packing material left by your dentist. Also, the dentist should have given you a syringe to irrigate the site...

Rinse your mouth with plain water after eating. You should probably call the dentist tomorrow.

dont put a toothpick there, yeah it is normal, just wash it out with water.

you need to rinse really well after eating & invest in a water pik to keep those holes clean while they are closing up. also use listerine or another antibacterial mouthwash to keep from getting an infection.

You need to go back to the dentist and have them repacked with gauze, the pain and taste will just disappear. Also rinse the holes out with salt water.

gargle with salt water-that always helps--
