I'm 21 years old and my wisdom teeth are just now growing in. what should I do?!

Question:

I'm 21 years old and my wisdom teeth are just now growing in. what should I do?

Two of my wisdom teeth are growing but it's not painful at all. The annoying thing is that one of them is still halfway underneath my gums so left over food gets stuck in there. It's hard to get it out. what should I do? Also should I be worried about getting them removed? They do not hurt at all. The problem is I don't have dental insurance so I KNOW it's going to be very expensive. HELP ME!

Answers:

I have that problem too. My wisdom teeth didn't come in until I was in my early 20's. I didn't think they completely grew in, because there was some skin over the tops. Food would get stuck under the skin and would case an irritation.

I went to my dentist, and he said there wasn't much I could do. The problem is not that your wisdom teeth are growing in, it is that when they grew in a little skin flap remains. Eventually that skin flap will wear away.

Because my wisdom teeth don't pose a problem with impacting the other teeth in my mouth, my dentist said any surgery to remove my wisdom teeth was really not necessary. Because I don't have dental insurance I decided not to have them removed.

The best thing to do is to keep your teeth clean. Brush regularly, and avoid foods like popcorn and peanuts, that get caught up under the skin flap.
