Very Embarrassed.....?!

Question: Mature advice that is.
After an accident 3 years ago the dentist last year was unable to repair my teeth and stop them from decaying from a growing infection and said there was no other option than to remove all my top teeth and replace them with a fake plate. My bottom ones aren't in great shape but i'm trying to get work done slowly.
I'm a very clean, well to do person but that one incident has ruined my dental.
On the 2nd January i have to have my gallbladder removed. I called (unwillingly) just now and enquired about my top plate and they said it has to be removed in the O.R for my breathing tube and aneasthetic and i can put them back in when i get into my room for recovery. I'm teary and insanely embarrassed and can't stop shaking. The surgery i'm fine with, it's just removing my teeth and i'm only 25.
Has anyone been through this - is there any way i can get away with not taking them out. I've never had them out more than 5 minutes i hate the feeling of it......

As with most of the other people here, I can tell you that the medical staff taking care of you will not make you feel bad for having a top plate. As a nurse, it is my job to care for many different patients, and with many different issues/problems/social histories/diagnoses. I have taken care of people with no limbs, loss of bladder/bowel control, mental healths issues, etc.
I have also had the "opportunity" to be a patient and undergo a few surgeries myself. The people that have taken care of me, and the ones that take care of you will be professional and caring individuals. Your surgeon wants you to heal well, the OR nurses want to make sure the operation goes well and no sterile procedures are broken, the anesthesia doc wants to make sure you are safe, breathing, and pain free for the whole procedure.
In recovery, the nurses will be taking care of you to make sure you are safe and healthy, pain free, and taken care of. It is our job. We, as nurses, docs, and health care providers have your best interests at heart, and even though you might feel embarrased or self concious, we dont even bat an eye. We want you to heal and recover and go home safe and healthy...THATS the only thing we care about.
The only person who is bothered by your top plate, is you. We dont notice, and we wont make you feel bad about it at all. So, as difficult as it may be- relax, prepare yourself for surgery, and think about how much better you are going to feel with that cranky, blocked, painful gallbladder out of the way. Those things hurt when they act up and start making your life miserable. You are going to be just fine! Have the surgery, stay in the hospital for a day or two then go home and get better! Best of luck!

Yes, anything that could cause a problem in the operation must be avoided. What's more important to you - being safe and well through a medical procedure and afterwards or a shallow bit of temporary loss of pride? Get over it and do as the doctors advise.

Awwww, poor thing. :( I'm sorry you're so embarrassed, but your surgeons won't think a thing of it!!! You need to take them out, for safety reasons. No one is going to see you but the staff in the OR and they won't care. Just concentrate on getting well, huh? Take care of yourself.

You're going to be in an OR - nobody will care about your teeth, don't worry!

AWwww
Fortunatly I have'nt had anything like this , But I sure feel sorry for you!
hang in there ok?

I doubt the doctor doing your surgery, and anyone else in the operating room, would care about your fake teeth. The have more important things to worry about, like making sure your gallbladder doesn't explode.

Good heavens, hun! Calm down! The doctors, nurses and especially the anesthesiologists have seen it all!

They'd rather you wake up safely than to accidentally swallow a tooth or something.

You'll be fine!

you will be sedated, naked with tubes everywhere and the doctors will be cutting you open to remove your gallbladder. no one is going to care about your missing teeth. its a medical procedure in a hospital and not a beauty contest and if you are only 25 i'm sure if they are looking anywhere i wont at your missing teeth.

I empathise becuase the idea of losing bits of your body is the stuff of nightmares - fingers, teeth, eyes etc.

But Doctors are professional and your health is more important that your teeth.

Medical staff really appreciate cooperation. Once on a rescue mission we had to tell a guy we had to stick a catheter up his urethera because he was all minced up and he just gave us a thumbs up - his bravery, and willing ness to cooperate really wanted us to do a professional job for him.

Since it is a safety issue regarding removal of your dentures, there really is no way around it. Have someone who you trust to be with you in recovery so they can give you your teeth as soon as possible when you wake up. I too have upper dentures (partial) and it is embarrassing. Remember, these are professional people you will be dealing with and no one will make you feel bad because of your teeth. Good luck with your surgery and get well soon!

Its ok to be embarrassed.I have not gone throuthg this but i understand how you feel.Dont worry its gonig to be fine and just think that if nothing happend to you in the accident why would it happend now. I wish you luck and be brave.

You'll be out cold for almost the whole time that your plate will be out, so I doubt you'll even notice. Also, medical staff have seen EVERYTHING--your missing top teeth will not phase them in the slightest. Just focus on relaxing for surgery and have a speedy recovery (and just think--you'll get to have your teeth in throughout your whole recovery, so that's one less thing to give you discomfort. I'm sure the feeling of recovering from gall bladder surgery is not too pleasant to begin with.

You'll be fine. :-)

It is very normal for you to feel the way you do! Even elderly people refuse to take out their dentures because of the same feelings! You have to realize though, that the doctors and nurses are not there to judge you and are not going too! You should really try not be embarrassed...take a deep breath and realize it's not the end of the world if a few people see you without your top palate.

Unfortunately you will have to remove the dental plate. It is for your safety. I know it's something that you don't want to do, but you must accept the fact that it will be out for a couple of hours only. Remember, the only people who will see you without your plate are medical professionals who see much worse on any given day, and they are not judgmental at all. Most medical professionals are very caring people.
I know it's easy to tell someone else not to worry about something they have no control over. But, since there is no other option for you, then you have to make it through it the best you can, period.
Good luck to you!

Hospital personnel are professionals. They have had many, many patients in your condition of many ages. All your info. is in your chart and that includes why you have dentures. Don't worry! There is no way you can get through the operation without taking your teeth out. You don't want to risk your life by choking to death, do you? Besides the info. is already in your chart. If you feel that upset about it, ask to speak to a social worker before your surgery. You will also be speaking to your doctor and tell him how you feel. He will reassure you to them it is no big deal. Good luck!

I think your lucky. I would love to have brand new shiny white front teeth.

don't feel bad....i know people younger than you with dentures,,,, don't let it bother you, i myself have bad teeth they are getting worse all the time, it can be embarassing, but the doctors won't care, it will be ok :)....good luck

Yes, it's embarrassing. That is normal at your age. We are very worried about our appearance...
Please know this is for your safety. I too had to have my teeth pulled due to family inherited dental issues. I was 19 and mortified, I hid in my room for 3 weeks because I couldn't talk right.

When your mouth relaxes while under anesthesia it is easy for your denture to drop down out of place. This could block your breathing, you don't want them in during surgery.

There is no way around it. They do need to be out. For the same reason you don't wear glasses or contacts while having surgery. Remember the people that are with you are professionals... they want you safe. They aren't looking at your teeth, they are operating on your abdomen.

Practice taking your teeth out for short periods of time, your tissue in your mouth needs to have oxygen, so they need to be out for short periods of time to breath. I do this when I take a shower and breathe thru my mouth. I know its hard but neccessary. Otherwise you will have further damage to your mouth tissue down the road.

I'm now in my 50's and have had several operations. I still am rarely seen without my top denture in. But I do understand the safety issues when in the hospital.

You need to make the decision your life is worth more than your appearance - and it's only for a short time. I have found the nurses very empathetic, offering my dentures to me as soon as I awoke to avoid furthur embarassment.

best wishes on your surgery.
