Mouth sore?!

Question:

Mouth sore?

I've had this sore on the inside of my lower lip. I thought it was a canker sore at first, but it doesn't look like one and doesn't hurt at all. It's clear in color and looks like it's filled with a fluid... What could this be? I've been gargling with Crest ProHealth mouthwash the past couple days and it seems to be irratating it... I'm beginning to wonder if it's starting to leak whatever is inside it, because all day I've had this horribly bitter taste in my mouth. I've had it for over a week. It doesn't seem to be getting bigger. Should I see a doctor? It's just annoying.. I can feel it there...

Answers:

Jennifer....I would say from your brief description that you likely have a blocked or crushed salivary duct in your lip, or what is called a mucocele. Depending on the cause, ( usually something like biting your lip) they can resolve themselves quite quickly or they can persist for a long time. Another possibility is what is called an Irritation Fibroma. Something like a tooth can continually rub your lip, causing this lump. It will not likely go away on its own and whatever caused it needs to be corrected so it doesn't come back after it is removed.
Since it sounds like a "blister" it could also be a herpes sore. But this lump will turn into an ulcer in a matter of a few days. Since you have had it for over a week it is unlikely to be this.
A canker sore will run its course in about 12 days, while these other lumps usually last longer.
You should see a dentist, an oral surgeon, an oral pathologist even a periodontist to have it removed and biopsied.
