If your tooth is not infected when you go in for the appointment, generally root canals are not that bad. They are able to get you numb enough when no infection is there. Take some headphones and player with your favorite music, wear your darkest sunglasses if you'd like. Close your eyes and just let them do their stuff. Many of my patients have said it was a lot easier than they thought it would be, it was just like a long filling appointment. Take some anti inflammatory meds. prior to the appointment. Tell your dentist you did. This will help the medication already be in your system. You will have soreness from both the injections and the pressures applied to the tooth. You will need to take more later too, but this way it is there if the numbness wears off quickly. You'll be fine...
