Is it normal to have a fear of dentists?!

Question: I only go when I need to but I don't really bother otherwise - even though I know you supposed to have a check up every 6 months. I am so afraid I can't bear the thought of taking my 8 year old boy to see a dentists. Just as well really, cause there are no NHS dentists in our area.

Well, some people have bad experiences and end up with a phobia. It's not good to pass this fear on to your son though, as if he doesn't have check-ups he'll end up with bad teeth and need treatments which reinforce both of your fears. My mum took both me and my brother and we all had treatment together so we could see there was nothing to be frightened of, as a result I've never had any dental problems and quite enjoy going. I like the taste of the tooth polish! Bad oral hygiene can affect your health and be incredibly painful, not to mention the psychological and social effects of bad teeth. Do you want that for your son? Find a good dentist (if you do it shouldn't hurt at all - I had a wisdom tooth out and it took five minutes and didn't hurt at all - I even got my tooth in a pot!). Let your dentist know you're worried but, for your son's sake, try not to show it!

I am terrified. I'm nearly 18 and my mum still has to take me and hold my hand just for a check up.

many people have a fear of dentists because of the tools they use or because of stories that they have heard happen in a dentists chair, many are not true. if you knew where your fear stemmed from you could conquer it, theyre really nothing to be afraid of, they help more than anything.

yes especially if you have already had a bad experience at the dentist

wel its normal!!! but someday u have 2 take ur son 2 the dentist!!!

Oh yeah my mom has a terrible fear of the dentist but she toolk me when I was little (Now I can drive myself) and I LOVE the dentist chances are your kid will too. Lots of people have a fear of the dentist.

Yes but if you have had a toothache,,all night,,,you cant wait to see him,,,,,,,

hell yeah, even if its just a general checkup

you should take him for regular check ups and don't pass along your fears to him...........

We had the same problem with NHS Dentist not being available, luckily recently a "new" practice (not a good word if you have fears !) opened ,and my Mrs found out in the first 100 or so,as she works in NHS........We both registered there and are getting treatment.......i myself had multiple teeth out as a 11 year old and was put under by GAS , the Dentist was a horrible and ignorant oaf......I had nightmares under the gas(swimming around trying not to drown in his eyeball),he was rough with the pulling and actually knelt on my chest (i know as i had the bruising) when i came round he was slapping my face (not hard) which was very scary,i pointed to the sink as i wanted to spit out the blood and he sternly said "you cant have any water" , i decided he was an aas hole and spat all out all over him ! .....Luckily for him i was a scrawny 5 stone kid and not the 6ft and 14 stone man i am now,my father had taken me there and was shocked to see the state i was in and took me out to the car,he told me to wait there and he returned to the dentists,he never told me what occured in there , but knowing my father,my blood probably was the least of that dentists worries for that day !......It took me a very long time to even go to a dentists again, about 6 years in fact, any problems i had i got a brother to sort, pulling out my teeth with bullnose pliers once !.....when i did go to a dentist they were quite shocked at the "butchery" inside and began rectifying the problems, but this dentist was polite, caring, explained everything, gave extra shots of pain killers/numbing stuff and made sure i was ok afterward......every other dental practice i have ever attended has been a comfortable and reassuring experience and i have had no problem since, other than the initial walk through the door and the wait in waiting room, having explained my previous experience to these dentists they make the wait as short as possible so i do not get wound up,they also give pre injections so i am completely pain free. The thing is to tell them your fears and as a bloke, tell them that you are frightend that you may hurt them in return (attack being the best form of defence !) They will then make absolutely every effort to avoid pain themselves. As has been said,do not scare your son,by showing your fear, but also make sure your dentist knows your fear,go see the man/woman before your sons appointed visit, see the receptionist and ask for a quick word with the "organ grinder" :-) Oh yeah reward your son for being a good and brave boy afterward too , positive association.
