For everyone with braces?!

Question: I just got bottom braces and they hurt a lot. How do you eat with them? I would think food gets stuck, especially when eating bagels or sandwiches. And can you even bite into things anymore or do you have to cut them up.
Also, I had top braces ad I was able to chew gum. Can I do this with bottom braces?

the pain will soon go away...dont worry about that...i have had my braces for about 6 months...food does occasionally get stuck in the bottom but u just have to use ur tongue or w/e to get it out...its not a constant struggle eating tho...i have sandwhiches every day no problem...bagel are fine to although u might want to wait a little bit since they are a little hard to eat at first. I have top and bottom braces and i chew gum a lot...sometimes it will get a tiny bit stuck in the bottom part but if u just play around with it a little bit it comes off. sugar free gum is the best to use because it is less sticky and doesnt get into the braces as much...so i hope i helped you a little bit...good luck

Well I have had my braces on for almost 4 years now. I chew gum even though your not supposed to and I've never had a problem with it so I doubt the chances are that big. Eating breads and stuff, food does get stuck in your teeth but as for biting into things, i can't eat a whole apple so I have to cut it up and that's probably best because otherwise you could break them. Hope I helped and good luck. The pain will be gone soon!

if you just got them, give it a few days and then you will get used to them. as for cutting food, you can bite into things, it will get stuck a little but it comes out on its own fast usually. and yes, chewing gum will be fine. just dont bite into hard things like apples because you dont want to break a bracket.

good luck!

Ok I just got top braces yesterday and get bottoms soon. I eat regulary because they don't hurt only a bit "touchy." To get food out I use this brush (some call it a tree brush I think) and it's called an interproximal brush and I use it everyday so far! It works well! I can bite into soft things but I ate some crackers today and of course had to cut it and put it in my mouth (it kind of hurt!) I can't answer the last question because I don't have bottoms on yet but the orthodontist says don't chew gum including sugar free!
peace!

God Bless!

On the days that they hurt, (about five days) you can't eat things like bagels. You have to eat soft food like mashed potatos, oatmeal, yogurt, pudding, and other soft things like that. You will be able to bite into things after the pain goes away. But you have to cut up really hard things like apples or your brackets could come off. You can chew the gum that was made for people with braces and dentures like Freedent.

You really shouldn't chew gum while you have braces (experience) And yes the first couple of days with your lower braces can be tough, I had soft foods for the first three days, just because the brackets can easily break, I had to cut up apples, stay away from sticky foods, and make sure you clean b/c food gets stuck in the bottom ones easier. Also, if you feel for the first little while it's risky to bite into foods, cut the up.

yeah you can chew gum. No nothing really does get stuck. You can eat like normal.

if you just cut up your food into small pieces
and chew with your back teeth then the pain should go down
but trust me they won't hurt after awhile
and you will get used to it

also i do chew gum...not often
but one i ate a starburst and my bracket broke
but it depends
